The Fox commentators noted that Rick Perry's best moment was his anecdote about a cancer survivor whose "lobby[ing]" convinced him to mandate Gardasil. It appeared to be his one good moment in an otherwise dreadfully bad debate performance. Unfortunately, as National Review Online contributor Katrina Trinko exposes, it was all a fib:
When Michele Bachmann lobbed the crony capitalism charge at Rick Perry, he said that the lobbyist who had impacted him was 31-year-old Heather Burcham.I got lobbied on this issue, Perry said. I got lobbied by a 31 year old young lady who had stage 4 cervical cancer. I spent a lot of time with her. She came by my office She talked to me about this program.
Perry, however, did not meet Burcham until after he had signed the executive order mandating the HPV vaccine.
Perry spokesman Mark Miner denies that Perry spoke disingenuously about Burchams role in the process, but concedes that Perry did not meet Burcham until after signing the executive order.
Miner says Perrys comment was not at all misleading.
When youre talking about legislation, when youre going through the legislative process, you have people come in all the time, Miner says. This was someone who really had a personal, human story to tell on this. They hit it off. And the governor really kept in touch with her, visited her in the hospital, visited her throughout her long ordeal, really had a personal impact on him.
I just read that thread. And there are people who still think Perry’s going to walk away with the nomination? Hard to believe.
He’s gone from underwhelming to disastrous in record time. I’ll be shocked if Romney hasn’t completely overtaken him in the next batch of polls.
Perry never claimed he met her before the EO. He said she “lobbied” him, and she did: during his fight with the state legislature.
It’s a perfectly plausible explanation for what he said.
It doesn’t matter anyway. Perry’s campaign crashed and burned last night without this “lie”.
If someone can prove that he made money from the vaccine deal then he’s done otherwise this is just a blip.
Where did Perry say he met her prior to the EO?
I’ve still yet to see it.
Here is the title to this thread. First of all, it is a title created by the poster, and not the link that he provided. Secondly, it's false, as not you or anyone else has been able to show me where Rick Perry lied about meeting this woman. I expect anti-Perry sentiment from the same handful of posters, but to see it from the moderators here means FR's 2012 legacy will be Mitt Romney, who literally signed a bill forcing taxpayers to fund abortions, as the GOP candidate to face Obama. If that happens, this site may as well close up shop.
If you had any integrity you would have pinged the owner of this site to your post.
I understand that you’re upset about Perry’s flame-out.
But seriously, brother, you’ve got to stop attacking FR and bringing JR into this. It’s not fair and it’s not right. JR and the mods are serious about finding a strong conservative to take on ZerO next year and he’ll fight tooth and nail against Romney.
It’s still very early and we have months left before the primaries. It really is anybody’s game at this point. Romney is not a shoe-in.
I understand finding a good candidate, but allowing blatant lies like this thread to stand with a title made up by the original poster isn’t what FR is about, IMO. If it is now, then it’s FR that has changed, not me.
Not surprised at your deflection.
It wasn’t a question about you “personally”. I said I assumed you were pro-life. It was a question about how you applied your pro-life principles, and weighed them against your apparent principle that Government should never “mandate” anything against the prerogative of a mother to make decisions about her child.
And you didn’t answer the question, which was whether you supported a government mandate to forbid a pregnant woman from taking a pill that would terminate her pregnancy. Because you are apparently against government mandating that parents give their children life-saving vaccinations, so I wonder if you are for or against government mandating that women not take pills that threaten their children’s lives.
But while you won’t answer the question, I feel that maybe you understand the point, which is why you aren’t willing to answer the question.
Late to thread.. and hasn’t happened yet.. but that sure look like an Opus :p
Well, perhaps you should try a different website if you think FR is so bad.
I love FR. I think vetting candidates is a great exercise for all of us and is necessary to defeat Obama. I don’t think that editorializing thread titles to the point that they don’t tell the truth reflects well on FR though, Jim. It’s long been a rule that a linked post needs to have the actual title of the article linked.
Well, you’re about one dig away from a zot. Advise you to back off or begone, troll. We don’t support RINOs on FR.
I don’t support RINOs either, Jim.
I’d like an example of me supporting a RINO. Unless Perry is now a RINO, of course. In that case, there are quite a few regular posters to ban. Or, is the idea here these days to not support any GOP candidate, and mostly attack them, unless Sarah Palin enters the race? If so, that’s fine, and I’ll act accordingly in my posts and just stick to the Obama threads. I’m not trying to get a ZOT, Jim. We broke bread at John Barleycorns, and I’d like to do it again some day. Perhaps you could give another FR edict on appropriate posting rules without Sarah Palin being an announced candidate in the race? It would clear up a lot of confusion, IMO.
FReegards,
James
Those who support RINOs AND attack other posters AND/OR attack FR while doing so are definitely subject to the zot. And, sorry to burst your bubble, but with every passing debate Perry is proving himself to be an anti-liberty RINO. He’s now doubling down on stupid with his democrat-like attacks on tea party people regarding our refusal to go along with his support of taxpayer subsidies for illegal aliens. And you’re doubling down on stupid for supporting his obvious lies regarding his attempted governance by decree on the vaccination of 12 year old girls fiasco. You should both walk away from attempting to defend the indefensible. Romney is a mandate-loving statist POS, but Perry isn’t proving out to be much better. A pox on them both. And if you continue your attacks on our posters or our conservative causes or our website due to our not bending to the will of the RINOs then a pox on you too.
And I will thank you to mind your own business about the way I manage my website. If you don’t like it, vote with your feet. Continue as you are and I will vote with mine.
Sir, I am a doctor and a long-time FReeper, and was a volunteer lobbyist for pro-life laws in Austin in 2007. I support the HPV vaccine and hope you will take another look at Governor Perry’s true record of over 10 years.
The Texas Legislature gave the Governor the authority when they delegated the mandating of vaccines to the Executive Branch. He used his lawful authority. They balked, changed the law for one vaccine and only one vaccine, but left his opt out provision alone.
He gave that opt out provision more publicity than all the anti-vaccination advocates ever had - while easing the burden that parents faced.
Governor Perry has fought for control of the border all along. He’s cut spending, protected life and marriage, and knocked the RINOs off their bureaucratic pedestals in Texas.
As to the fight against the sanctuary bill, the Governor got it passed in the Senate. He put the Bill on the Special Session agenda, and Norm Adams (Texans for a Sensible Immigration Policy) and Steve Hotze (Conservative Republicans of Texas) came out to fight the Bill in the House, at the last minute because they didn't like Attorney General Abbott's language. http://www.texastribune.org/texas-legislature/82nd-legislative-session/sanctuary-cities-causes-rift-within-texas-gop/
Some examples of the ways the Governor and our State have tried to make up for the lack of response to the Federal government. Take another look:
Governor Rick Perry is for border control and has the record to prove it:
Governor Perry has always advocated for boots on the ground at the border, but has been unable to get the Feds to send the manpower. Hes advocated letting the military practice the use of unmanned Predator aircraft along our border ("Theyve gotta practice somewhere.)
There are National Guard troops on the Border. Perry has repeatedly asked for more and recently won approval for the 1200 (we only got about 250) that have been deployed to stay longer. Read this news report from a year ago.
As a direct result of the Governor alerting the Texas Republican Congressman about Obamas plan to remove the National Guard after less than 6 months, we'll have them longer. News report, here, from last month about the extension.
More, here http://www.freerepublic.com/%5Ehttp://wingright.org/2011/08/06/perry-palin-fish-or-cut-bait/
Watch and listen to Governor Perry talking with Greta van Susteren about the border. boots on the ground, and the problems with the fence. (You can see and hear the Texas Ranger helicopters in the background.)
He created the Ranger Recon force, sending 150 Texas Rangers (one riot, one Ranger) to the border along with helicopters and Texas Guardsmen. He demanded and got National Guard and two unmanned drones. He got the National Guard deployment extended beyond the original 6 months. Unfortunately, Texas only got 1/4 of the Guardsmen and 2/8 of the drones.
Texas (with our costs from the ICE detention center detainees being dumped in the State by Homeland security, support of Katrina refugees, our natural disasters like Ike, wildfires, and tornadoes) is expected to pay for our own Guard if we want them here after September.
Texas has spent $200 million a year on the cost of jailing illegal aliens that the feds bring here. Weve spent $79 million of our own Texas tax funds on troops, helicopters.
The Legislature refused to fund his virtual border, so he used money from the Governors discretionary fund. In some cases, local sheriffs and cities refused to cooperate.
Heres an article from January of this year showing resistance from border Sheriff Wiles.
