F&F this morning: Perry meet with Trump, common ground on unbalanced trade? (hugh, series)
(vanity)

Posted on 09/18/2011 9:43:23 AM PDT by Cringing Negativism Network

Was half-watching Fox and Friends this morning, when the topic turned to Donald Trump.

At first I was worried they might say, he's decided to run. That could be bad.

That wasn't what they said, to my relief, but what really surprized (and rather enthused) this poster came next...

Perry has already associated himself with the biggest birther bullhorn and a former federal prosecutor on the case:

Candidate go pretty much anywhere for endorsements. Arpaio said himself that Republican candidates contacted him in 2008 and they are doing it again in 2012. There is no surprise here and no secret birther agenda at work. In fact, Sheriff Arpaio was Mitt Romney's 2008 honorary Arizona chairman.

Also, you linked a WND article. I'm sorry, but your foolish if you trust anything WND, Corsi or Farah have to say about birther stuff. They constantly post exaggerated, hyped stories that never pan out. From what I read it sounds like some of these birther types raised the question with Arpaio, and maybe he said he'd have a few people look at it. That is pretty much completely meaningless, and you can bet that WND/Corsi blew it out of proportion as they normally do.

It is not too late for desperate Democrats to become birthers themselves either overtly or covertly, especially Hillary supporters!

Your completely delusional man. Birther conspiracies will not be an issue in the 2012 campaign. It's just not going to happen.

If Obama decides to “withdraw” suddenly, I believe that Arpaio will be the reason.

You'll really hang your hat on anything won't you? Obama is not going to withdraw and Arpaio may endorse one of our candidates, but it won't have anything to do with birther stuff.

I choose “C”.

Eliminate all federal taxation. Capital gains, eliminated. Income taxes, eliminated. Corporate taxes eliminated.

To replace all of that, a single, flat, across the board no-exceptions 100% import tariff on every single import.

End result, revenue neutral, zero taxation on anything manufactured, grown or removed from the ground in America.

Zero corporate taxes. Zero income taxes on employees.

Only taxes collected by the federal government, would be imposed on protectionist foreign countries.

Nothing could possibly be more righteous.

Or better (dramatically, and immediately), for American businesses.

Immediate, meaningful job creation, and repatriation of overseas money perhaps in the trillions.

All good.

I could go for that as long as it included all personal taxes - because there are some things (like oil, rubber, some foods) that we need to import. At least when we whacked our own populace with the tariffs they’d have some more money to buy the product.

Interesting.

I honestly believe in what I said. To tell the truth, I half expected you to oppose it.

You did not fall into my cleverly disguised trap.

My hat’s off to you. :)

No, you said yourself you'd impose a 100% tariff on ALL imports. You'd start a trade war with every country on earth whether they were overly "protectionist" or not.

As to the rest of your post... This is 2011, not 1825. You can't turn back the clock. What your proposing is probably the single worst plan I've ever seen advocated on Free Republic in all the years I've been here. It's not righteous, it's dumb - and it would completely destroy our economy, wipe out vast sums of American held wealth and leave the United States in such a weakened state that the world's vultures would pick us clean.

Running for president is a full time job. So what other full time job does Perry currently hold at the same time as he is running for president?

Apparently the same job a 2008 VP candidate had. Next question?

If you want to compare Palin who was drafted for a two month stint on the campaign trail with somebody who plans to campaign 15 months on the campaign trail, be my guest.

My comment stands. It really shouldn't be very controversial. Perry should do one or the other.

You can't turn back the clock. That we generated 90% of the Federal Governments revenue from tariffs in the 1800's does not mean we can do it today. It would not work.

I spotted your trap... In a purely theoretical approach, I could go along with your suggestion. However, since it has zero chance of ever happening, I’ll go with the best solution that could actually happen - roll down the corporate income tax, roll back regulations, and let America compete.

Theoretically, I’d say we mine all our oil reserves (including oil shale) and put the rest of the oil producing nations out of business by flooding the market - and using 100% of the proceeds to fund any Government function. Of course, we also eliminate the DOEs, the EPA, the DOT, the IRS, and 80% of the Federal Government.

But since that won’t happen either, rather than dealing in fantasyland constructs and traps, I’ll go for supporting a cut of corporate income taxes, rolling back regulations, and competition.

Help the US businesses and workers, rather than hurting them - like tariffs do.

Though I’m starting to cool a bit on that, because I’m frankly getting tired of waiting

Don't wait. Prepare!

Do something that will give her the nomination from your state. Do you know when your state is having its primary? Do you know when Super Primary Day is?

Are you serving with the Board of Election people? Could you work on election day? Is there a place to volunteer to do phoning, to address envelopes? Can you get or create some easy-to-read and understand-literature that you could hand out. Have you organized friends/family to do house-to-house canvassing? Are you in touch with your Organize for Palin State or local group.

Have you ordered just one bumper sticker yet? Do you know where to order them from? Get ready. She is going to announce "by the end of September." Personally, I think she may wait til October 3. But she will announce.

If the people of Texas are OK with him running - isn’t that enough? What does it matter to a non-Texan if he’s Governor and a candidate for President at the same time?

Or are you suggesting that in general NO Presidential candidate should have any job or position while they are running for President?

Actually as of 2009, US total tax proceeds were virtually identical to total US imports.

Dollar for dollar.

But that wasn’t the trap. In effect you are arguing that removing all federal taxation on corporations, employees, capital gains and repatriated corporate profits would be a bad idea, and the current scenario is better.

That’s just not very logical. The only logical basis for opposing what I have proposed, would be a contravening interest - perhaps a motivation based on collecting part of the margin, on imported goods.

What would be a terrible result of import tariffs? A trade war? (oh, the horror).

Are out so-called alleged trading “partners” going to stop buying things from us?

They don’t now.

There is a huge issue not discussed in the politically correct news facing Republicans. We know where the socialists in both parties stand and it is striping America of it’s freedom, wealth and opportunity.

Are they willing to go for American interests in foreign trade and dealings and leave the internationalist appeasers in the dust? We can not afford to continue to play patsy to the world in the name of politically correct non-racism and global socialism. No one has looked out for our interests for so long, we are losing everything to the rest of the world who are looking out for their own interests.

We have to be willing to rock the boat of American-European elitist “consensus” regarding “the third way.” That is what Trump was talking about in his pretend “run.”

I’ve had a Palin sticker on my car for most of the last year.

I took it off Friday after that fiasco with the radio talk show.

No worries, I have several extras ready. :)

Mine do also and it really shouldn’t be controversial. Until the people of Texas decide to change the rules so that an elected official must resign to run for a different office then there’s not much to be controversial about. Until they make the change it matters not a whit as it’s between the governor and his constituents.

You take care now and have a blessed day.

The acceptance of the Career Politician, who embodies the ruling class, versus the concept of the Citizen-Servant, is exactly why the Federal Government, and governments at every level, have managed to obligate the taxpayer to pay for a 14 trillion dollar debt. This is the problem the Tea Party is trying to do something about and the very career politicians that brought us to this crises are not going to get us out of it.

A candidate that resigns his existing Government Job (they all refer to it as a “job” these days) thus turning over the responsibilities of that “job” to one who can properly perform it, and forfeiting the handsome tax-payer-funded salary and benefits and prestige that go with it, while they pursue the next step in their career ladder, is certainly a purer candidate than the one who runs from the safety of their existing tax-payer funded “position”. Real tax-payers (those that produce in private industry) have always felt like they were being used as a steppingstone by these perennial office-holder career politicians. This applies to hacks of either party. You don’t hear that term (hacks) much anymore.

It is only relatively recently that the career politicians have been given a pass on running for a higher position while being paid to pretend they are doing the job the people elected them to do. The only people that could call them on it effectively (the media won’t, they are part of the same corrupt system) are the opposing candidates of the other political party, but since they are pulling the same scam, they can’t call their opponent on it!

Either can’t deal with the fact you have subconciously accepted the Career Politicial paradigm of Ruling-Class governance vs. real tax-payers prforming Citizen Service for a time, then going back to their real lives, kind of like was expected in pre-Wilsonian times, or you can’t.

Or perhaps you are just involved in the existing party structure and instinctively look to your career-politician “leaders” for guidance.

No, I am not arguing that. The choice isn't keep all those taxes as they are or eliminate all of them by imposing a 100% tariff on all imports. I'd cut many or even all of those taxes, reduce regulation, reduce the influence of American labor unions, weaken or perhaps de-fund the NLRB, and otherwise make the focus of government to remove as many roadblocks to US worldwide competitiveness as possible.

What would be a terrible result of import tariffs? A trade war? (oh, the horror).

The result would be more expensive consumer goods for Americans across the board, less competitiveness, a return to very problems that plagued the big 3 automakers, world isolation, the list goes on and on.

This is not the 1800's. The world is increasingly connected and globalized and there is simply no going back.
