Equador has gone to the socialist side. I really liked it when I was there in the early 90’s, but expect it could become a communist hell hole. Also potential for massive earth quakes and volcanic eruptions. I climbed several high-altitude volcanoes that were venting steam.

One of my drinking buddies during the 1990's was an economist from Ecuador, with plans to finish his graduate work here in the States. His plan was to return to Ecuador, peg the currency to the dollar (which I think they did), and repeat the Chilean experiment.

He's probably in an unmarked grave somewhere, now.
