Exactly. In a good economy people can be generous with their sympathy, and are not above feeling sorry for an addict. When the economy is in a nosedive and people are scared witless, they feel only anger toward a man who claimed he would fix it but turned out to be a flimflam coke head (or some approximation thereof).
