I think you nailed it. He’s almost certainly self-medicating way up the scale from mere booze. He has an addictive-dysfunctional personality and makes no attempt to (1) hide his past drug use, or (2) indicate he ever stopped, not to mention *how* he stopped.

Also, it could be a play for sympathy. The Obama camp is desperate, and they must remember how the sympathy factor worked in Hillary’s favor. It’s possible they think this will stem the poll bleeding.

If I had to guess, it’s both. His self-medicating is ratcheting up, plus they’re trying to cast him as a sympathetic figure, and blunt some of the harsher criticism.

Not gonna work.
