We adopted a yellow Lab under similar circumstances. The family’s parents were getting divorced and selling their house, and they were moving into apartments where they couldn’t keep pets.
Their young son wrote a letter to the other kids in his elementary school class, asking if anybody was able to adopt “Archie.” My wife showed me the letter, and we volunteered to give Archie a home. You could tell by the letter that the kid loved his dog; he even mentioned that Archie liked having his tummy rubbed.
So Archie lives with us, and seems pretty happy. He gets two hots and a cot, lots of attention and tummy rubs, and at least one long walk per day.
We kind of/sort of wound up with a Basset Hound recently for similar reasons. Daughter was buying a house and it fell through but she had already given notice on the rental she was in. Only thing she could find was an apartment so to Nanny’s house the big boy comes.
Didn’t have the heart to say no since he is granddaughter’s dog and she loves him so.
Bless you for taking in this baby! It’s so sad when something like this happens. A similar thing (not divorce, though) happened to a family whose father worked with my husband. He had gotten involved with drugs and they were being evicted from their apt. They did not want to have a dog to think about so they abandoned him in the apt. when they left. When my husband went to the apt. to check to see that they had gotten everything, he saw “Rocky” inside in a state of panic. He took him and brought him home. We already had another much older dog (now 12 years old) but took him in as well and made it work. We got him vetted, fixed and on a better food. Animals know when they have been rescued and they are forever grateful.
