I was fishing in Wyoming about 30 years ago and a herd of cattle were being driven past my fishing hole. They stopped for the night and the cowboys setup camp. One of the cowboys was talkative. We got to talking about the Hole in the Wall and I asked how hard it was to get there. He gave me the answer and offered to take me when the drive was over. I asked about what went on there and he swore that when he was a young man Butch passed through and told stories around a camp fire one night. He asked his dad (who he claimed had a sketchy past) if that was the real Butch Cassidy. His dad told him it was and that he had known Butch in the old days and it was the worst kept secret around.
