I can’t believe the first real space opera is not on the list: EE Doc Smith’s “Skylark” and “Lensman” series.

And “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” doesn’t qualify as some of the best SF of all time ?

Oh, yeah - I devoured EE 'Doc' Smith's work when I was a kid. Read and re-read the Skylark and Lensman series. I was happy to see Iain M Banks make it on to the list, although I thought his Against a Dark Background was an underrated masterpiece. Dark overall, and savagely funny in places.
