Hello Trial Watchers.
Grab your yellow legal pads, sharpen your #2 pencils, don your asbestos undies (you'll need them!), and let the flames and the day begin.
Today is the first day of the live thread. Speculation abounds surrounding the surprise one-day recess on Saturday. There is talk of a plea-bargain, discovery violation, witness tampering, and, God forbid, even a mistrial.
Today I heard some feel Chaney Mason may be withdrawing, that he doesn't like working with Jose Baez and is sick of the case.
I believe television coverage begins at 8:00 a.m. and the trial starts at 9:00 a.m.
You have to go check it out. I was just over there and the reporters are saying the defense is going to move for a new "non death qualified" jury. Judge Perry came out in his robes and handed two big envelopes to the attorneys. (A motion?) Ann Finnell is here for the defense to ask the court to dismiss this jury, the reporter says, based on last week's Florida court decision. Supposedly an excellent lawyer.
I was actually on a jury for a double murder trial a few years ago, here in Palm Beach County. The defendant was very snarky and “smart-alec” looking (sort of like Casey) until he heard our verdict.
Then he broke down like a baby.
To this day, I don’t know if he was really over-confident, or what. Because he acted very confident - almost arrogant. But the defense had NO CASE. There was no way this guy was going to be found not guilty.
The whole thing was quite an experience.
I think the defense team wants her to look as pitiful as possible for the jurors’ sake. It’s working. Can’t stand her hair pulled back like that.
I missed seeing Casey walk in this morning. I see her sitting at the table and she looks subdued to me.
Casey's defense team alleged she was incompetent and filed a motion to determine competentcy to proceed. The court then appointed three experts to examine Casey on Saturday and filed their reports. Both the State and the Defense have now stipulated to abide by the reports of the experts. I thought I heard the reports CANNOT be sealed by law "at this time"...did I hear that right?
So the show goes on.
Defense is now calling Detective Uri Mellich. (Spelling?)
Yes, that is what I heard.

I’m sure Casey, who thinks she’s the smartest one in the room ,did her darndest to appear incompetent.
The mystery is solved. I was afraid it was going to be a mistrial.
Since Perry put the results of the competency into the court records, does that mean we will someday see them? Can you imagine her talking to THREE different doctors???? They could probably write a book each!
Sounds like Baez could be trying for a discovery violation or a non-admission, but it sounds to me like that didn't work. He's obviously trying to go after the Detective's credibility on the matter, police misconduct, or shoddy investigation practices. Or all three.
Baez showing Melich an email now for his review...
Doesn’t it appear that Casey is looking particularly mean today? No smiles today.
We should be able to see the records someday. Sounds like Casey was real busy this weekend. I wonder why her lawyers began to think she is incompetent. They should have had her evaluated before the trial, imo.
In my opinion, Baez isn’t laying a glove on this detective/witness. So far, anyway.
Not watching, but glad to hear she’s looking “mean”—hope the jury takes note. She’s probably really ticked off about not getting the “incompetent” ruling to go her way.
FWIW, she has the look of someone who knows the gig is up.
Well, we knew it was coming.
I think Melich is doing a good job, as he did before. Even if Baez trips him up, Ashton or Burdick will set things straight. I have the tv on, I’m on FR, and I’m listening to the testimony on WFTV through my computer headphones. I think I’ve got the case covered. lol
Melich was the lead detective on this case. Says all the subpoenaed phone records focused on the specific time frame of June 1 to July 15, 2008, and these subpoenas were based on information provided by Casey Anthony. With these records, police were unable to verify anything Casey said with regard to the (non-existent) babysitter Zenaida Gonzales.
