I was just watching the original "True Grit" starring John Wayne. Yes, he deserved his Oscar for the role of Rooster Cogburn but opposite him was someone who played his part horribly. I am talking about Glenn Campbell as the Texas Ranger. Sheesh! Talk about stilted delivery. Really bad. Another example of bad acting was also in a John Wayne movie---"The Alamo." It was Frankie Avalon as Smitty who was supposed to be a young Tennessee frontiersman. I like Frankie Avalon in the beach flicks but, let's face it, he was waaay too urban to be believable in the role of Smitty. Whenever I see "The Alamo," it is impossible to forget that this is just a movie because of Frankie Avalon's completely unconvincing acting.
There are many other major movies with examples of really horrible acting. I cited a couple of such examples, so please list yours.
LOL.
Gene Roddenberry was lucky nobody appropriated the ideas from Forbidden Planet before he did. It's weird though, considering that Star Trek wasn't successful until after it was cancelled.
Not sure if it is the worst performance, or the best performance of a rotten character, but I nominate Faye Dunaway in “Mommie Dearest”. She absolutely creeps me out in that particular role, and it is difficult to watch her in anything else without coloring her performance with the stain of Joan Crawford.
Who is worse? The brutal bitch-animal, or the actress who plays her so well...??
David Mamet appears to encourage the actors in his movies to speak as if they are just reading lines. I’m not sure of the reasoning behind this.
But you gotta love the guy anyway. He was who he was.
I've always wondered about this one. Why do we expect an American actor playing a German to speak English in the movie with a German accent? Since he'd be speaking German rather than English, why does a fake German accent make it more believable?
Also what in the heck does a Mongolian accent sound like? Would you know a realistic one if you heard it?
If you want really bad Denise Richards, try and watch “Starship Troopers” without gagging.....
The entire movie is a direct insult to the memory of Robert Heinlein...
You actually paid for and saw Michael Moore in his movies? And you admitted it, LOL!!! Ugh seeing his large bod on the large screen would have made me sick for weeks. He has to be the most disgusting personality to ever make and be in a movie.
The entire cast of “Nothing But Trouble”. Demi Moore, John Candy, Dan Akroyd, Chevy Chase. That has to be in the top 10 worst movies category, and in the top 5 worst acting jobs by 4 well known stars.
To be fair, ALL those really old westerns were terrible. John Wayne made his first good movie (Stage Coach) in 1939.
That's exactly what I was going to post.
Too funny.
Also Patrick Swayze as "Brodie" in the same movie.
Just dreadful.
Exactly, and I think I must have seen them all on a local channel a couple of years ago.
Any movie with Sean Penn or Will Farrell. Lately we've avoided movies with Jennifer Anniston (acting depth skills); ditto Scarlett Johansen.
I can’t believe Steven Seagal didn’t make anyone’s list.
Steven Seagal in anything, but specifically “On Deadly Ground”. He directed that mess too, so he should get extra consideration as the worst.......ever.
Brad Pitt in “Meet Joe Black”. Although, he is a good actor, so that may have been the director’s problem.
Before I opened the thread I thought “Glen Campbell in True Grit”, but you beat me to it.
Kevin Costner in “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves” was particularly bad as well.
Cruise in “Eyes Wide Shut”. Reviews were so bad, I didn’t bothere seeing it.
Overall, Cruise has had some pretty good pictures, AND some real duds.
“Rain Man” was very good.
“Forbidden Planet” was the best of all those 1950’s flying saucer and sci fi movies. I watched it recently and it still holds up well, even the special effects age believable and they were not using special effects to try and make a movie interesting.
They went back further and used a beautiful girl wearing not much clothes. Anne Francis really was a beauty. The story or plot was also much better than average. Also lots of actors whose faces would become more familiar later.
Even better than “Invaders From Mars”.
