I find it hard to believe, but my late father-in-law said he personally saw the Red Cross charging Servicemen for blood in the Pacific Theater during WWII. He was on a Destroyer Escort (DE) and always gave generously to Salvation Army.

I find it hard to believe, but my late father-in-law said he personally saw the Red Cross charging Servicemen for blood in the Pacific Theater during WWII. He was on a Destroyer Escort (DE) and always gave generously to Salvation Army. My grandfather always recalled stories from WWII, on the front line, that the Red Cross would come through and offer hot coffee and pastries to the troops - FOR A PRICE! They charged the GIs for hot coffee and a doughnut. Since they were stationed on the front line, most had no funds with which to buy a cup of hot coffee. He cursed the Red Cross his entire life. They will never see a nickel from me.
