Our parish includes dark-skinned Americans, mixed-race couples, emigrants from Africa . . . I can't imagine any of them conducting themselves in this way. I would hate for any of them to be harmed by the actions of irresponsible mobs or a subsequent backlash. People may be getting more edgy, but I really don't see most Americans taking this out on their darker-skinned neighbors. I think we're collectively better than that, and too many of us have children in school together, worship together, or otherwise know one another as individuals.
I believe we have people in positions of power who are quite intentionally stirring up class war and racial animosity. If violence results, they have an excuse to suppress it with harsh measures, including imposition of martial law. We must resist becoming part of that excuse.
