Any Lawn and Garden Folks Out There? (vanity/help)
Posted on 05/22/2011 6:34:34 PM PDT by freejohn
Am I the first 'dummy' to ever post something SO off topic and foreign to FReerepublic?
There just aren't ANY forums (Regardless of topic) where folks respond as quickly as here!
I have this stuff that just 'exploded' and is taking over my lawn and have No idea what it is called or What will do away with it!?
Some answers that I have received from elsewhere are: shotweed, bittercress and clover.
Sure hope there's a weed expert around?
Thanks Everyone.

General climate or location might help the searcher. They look like shade area weeds from the pic.

I'd call it chickweed and have a 50/50 chance of being right.
It's certainly a broadleaf weed that you can kill with weedbgone or any other pesticide labeled for broadleaf weeds.
Depending on what kind of place this is, you could put down mulch to stop it, put down grass sod (be sure you get enough sun - this might be a reason you have this stuff instead of grass if it's a lawn) or plant some sort of ground cover. DON'T plant english ivy, though. Ajuga or Japanese spurge work well in the shade.

I don’t know what it is, but what will do away with it is a broadleaf herbicide. Kills the broadleaf, leaves the grass alone.

Pleasant (relatively) weeds BTW. The pics look more like a bush.

Does it have yellow flowers? Take a (google) look at trifolium campestre. Just guessing, of course. If that’s what it is, trust me, you don’t want it.

Ping to the Weekly Garden Thread for help?
My guess is to keep the lawn well mowed and seed or sod with the recommended turf grass for your area. Should eventually choke it out.

I’m in Virginia and I do have a pretty thick and green lawn but this stuff is growing in it anyway.
It is also pretty sunny where it is growing.
Not a bush either .. just a thick and fast spreading .. ‘something’!?

Thanks bigheadfred
One question though?
Why are the Garden threads being posted in News/Activism?

It almost looks like phlox. Are they individually seeded shoots or part of an entire plant(s)? The pics makes it hard to tell.
