One man has gone to extraordinary lengths to save his family's home from rising floodwaters...by building a giant levee and moat system.
Russell Petty, 50, of DeValls Bluff, Arkansas spent several weeks excavating and piling sand bags, including with the help of 100 friends and neighbors, reports The New York Times.
Mr Petty's home is menaced by high water from the nearby White River, in a state that has been badly battered by flooding and tornadoes this spring.

You miss the point of a man (with the help of his friends) laboring to save his property. This is what free people do.
Money is NOT the answer to every question, nor the solution to every problem, contrary to the current "wisdom".

Though if I could cash in for what my county says my property is worth per their assessment, I would be somewhat tempted.
Flood Insurance doesn’t actually stop the flood.
How long will it be before the government comes to destroy it saying that it was illegally built?
