Yes, it has a wonderful performance by Walter Huston - Mr. Scratch. It’s based on a poem which became the basis of a play and then a movie. It’s available on DVD and it’s great for kids as well as adults. The trial sequence is scary!
Oh yeah, it is! The “jury of the damned”? Another scary part was when Mr. Scratch takes out a case from his pocket w/the trapped souls he took. It looks like a small butter-fly collection case. One of them says something like “help me!”, or something like that.
He gets somewhat nasty toward Jabez Stone when he says he wants out of the contract; so he threatens to take Stone’s young son! Still another somewhat spooky scene was when that strange woman who seduces Stone is dancing w/one of the villagers, and they go around and around until he dies. Brrrr...
I loved Mr. Webster’s (Edward Arnold)speech at the end, did you? That was really stirring!
