And this might be why he never runs... not the F-bombs... it sounds like Trump has the quintessential rich politician problem: Vietnam.
According to a new document unearthed by The Smoking Gun: Donald Trump received 4 student deferments, and one medical deferment, which is in contradiction to a previous quote explaining his draft status: I actually got lucky because I had a very high draft number. Ill never forget, that was an amazing period of time in my life.
Technically, that doesn't have to be a lie. Eventually Trump got a high draft number, but it appears that it's definitely not the only way he avoided the war.
Again, that Vietnam service has been an issue for many candidates is known to everyone, and for someone who was born wealthy -- and going to Wharton at the time -- the deferrals look worse.

And the 2/1/72 reclassification to 4F is also odd. Of course it was irrelevant after he got #356 and the war was winding down. Some medical problem must have cropped up to get the 4F. Things like bad vision, bad knees, etc., could result in a 4F.
I am no Trump supporter... I would not vote for him... but he has more Military experience than many that bash him.
“Trump attended the The Kew-Forest School, Forest Hills, New York, as did some of his siblings. After he had some difficulties there when he was 13 years old, his parents sent him to the New York Military Academy (NYMA), hoping to direct his energy and assertiveness in a positive manner.[13] At NYMA, in upstate New York, Trump earned academic honors, and played varsity football in 1962, varsity soccer in 1963, and varsity baseball from 1962 to 1964 (baseball captain 1964). The baseball coach, Ted Dobias, a local celebrity for his work with area youth, awarded him the Coach’s Award in 1964. Promoted to Cadet Captain-S4 (Cadet Battalion Logistics Officer) in his senior year, Trump and Cadet First Sergeant Jeff Donaldson (NYMA class of 1965; West Point 1969) formed a composite company of cadets, taught them advanced close-order drill, and marched them all down Fifth Avenue on Memorial Day in 1964. Trump attended Fordham University for two years before transferring to the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He graduated in 1968 with a Bachelor of Science degree in economics and concentration in finance.”
The MSM is really trying to destroy Trump now. I’m actually starting to like him. I hope he stands up to this.
Everyone who went to college durring that period got a student deferment while they were in college. They became eligible for the draft after they graduated or dropped out. When the lottery went into effect the lottery number became the deciding factor. Trump went between 1-A(eligible) and 2-S(student deferment).
Trump didn’t “avoid” Viet Nam. He went to college.
This article is an obvious cheap shot. If Trump can stand up to this kind of stuff and give it right back to the MSM and the Washington elites then he is better than most Republicans.
Draft Dodger Rag. Phil Ochs hung himself in Elmhurst, Queens in 1976. Alcohol did him in.
The first draftee ever to get 4-Fed for permanent bad-hurr day.
... took advantage of school deferments, that were available to anyone willing to go to school.
These statements are not completely accurate.
LBJ refused to allow graduate deferments thus blocking undergraduates from simply continuing on with a student deferment in graduate school. However, if you were already a graduate student, you were only allowed to complete the program that you were matriculated in. So a person, in a Masters program at the time, would only be allowed to receive a Masters degree with a student deferment and upon completion would immediately become vulnerable to the draft. The lucky ones here were the graduate students who were enrolled in a doctoral program since doctoral studies are more open ended and can go on for years before completion.
By the late sixties the writing was on the wall, the anti-war movement was in full swing, and young American males were assigned lottery numbers to designate the order in which they would be drafted.
However, there were deferments to be had. If you were a full time student or involved in certain industries you would not be drafted until your status changed. These people were not considered draft dodgers. They were simply taking advantage of the opportunity not to get blown up in a far away land that by this time no one gave a crap about.
If your status changed you were given the dreaded 1A designation, i.e. draftable immediately, cannon fodder. at this time the draft dodger label was put into play.
You had three choices: 1. Raise your right hand and join up, 2. Leave the country to dodge the draft (usually Canada), or 3. Refuse to serve, go to jail and become the love object of a rather large man usually called Killer.
Of the three I joined, many fled, and some went to jail. There were no good choices. It was lose lose, and colleges were suddenly filled with young men who took many years to graduate.
You had to be there, and the only true dodgers were those who fled the country. Everyone else was just in survival mode.

you have got to see Big Wednesday...
Many, many, many of our top pols got multiple deferments while they were in college. Looks like Trump got that AND a high lottery number. His being a liberal Democrat, likely stalking horse for Hill, and a danger as a third-party candidate are all issues enough for me. But Viet Nam isn’t the story here.
