Many of us are familiar with the characterization of the GOP, adapted from the british conservative party, as The Stupid Party. Rush often observes that when it comes to the real life trench warfare of politics the republicans stink at it, and routinely get their heads handed to them even if they hold a pat hand.

This issue is a classic example. There is no reason that the GOP should not have had a team of steely-eyed ruthless opposition researchers working this claim ever since the Usurper became a threat, which was at least 2004 if you read tea leaves at all. Maybe they would have found the truth was innocuous--but it is criminally negligent that it had to wait for a heavyweight outsider like Trump to put some juice into the issue, after it languished only in the weak hands of well-meaning but inept amateurs for lo these seven years.

Proof in my estimation that we cannot trust any republican insiders to care enough about the Republic to ferret out the truth and let the chips fall where they may.
