According to Professor Goldfinger -- and other Tsunami experts from nearby Oregon State University -- “there are remarkable geologic parallels between what just happened in East Asia and what could happen in the Pacific Northwest. The Asian event happened where the India plate was being subducted beneath the Burma microplate, and it ruptured - for the first time since 1833 - along a 600-mile front that is just about the same length as the Cascadia Subduction Zone. “

..."We're not nearly as well prepared as the Japanese, and clearly they were overwhelmed," said Bill Steele, coordinator of the University of Washington's Seismology Laboratory. "It is a problem."

Juan de Fucu Subduction zone off WA & Ore is the only significant fault line on the Ring of Fire NOT to have experienced a major earthquake in the last 50 years. The last one around a 9.1 happened in 1700. It is not if, but when for the next one.

Interesting article. Like the land in Japan which sunk and remains under sea, the Oregon and Washington coast will also sink, putting some coastline under water. The area we ride horses on the beach has some big stumps where there used to be a forest. The stumps are under water at high tide.
