The sheer amount of red tape I had to go through to even BOOK a trip to the States (despite being security cleared to work in datacenters in police headquarters all over Europe, having a 100% clean bill of health from the vetting agencies this side of the pond AND being in the UK at the invitation of a certain large American company) actually had me in half a mind to not bother.

You are right! And call an immigrations official with a question, get he get the answer then hang up and call again with the question and you'll get different answer.

The US rewards those who come illegally and makes it very difficult for those like you. It's a shame.

I’ll take a pass on the Southern border given that I get sun-burnt in thirty minutes in the English summer.

The border police would be able to follow the trail of peeled skin and arrest me for illegal entry, assuming I hadn’t burned up like a vampire in a consecrated sun bed by the time they caught up.
