Out of more than half a million films made by Hollywood the character portrayed by Tom Hanks ranked top in the biggest ever poll of moviegoers.
The 1994 film was a box office hit and critically acclaimed with Hanks performance earning him the Oscar for Best Actor.
Audiences adored Gump as they followed his life from a child to adulthood as he took part in many of the pivotal events of the 1960s and 1970s.
The film, which took more than £500m at the box office, was based on the 1986 novel written by American author Winston Groom.
The film was also known for many of Gumps phrases, such as My momma always said, Life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what youre gonna get.
While Gump was the runaway winner, British secret agent James Bond was named as the second greatest film character.
007 has endured for almost 50 years after being created by author Ian Fleming.
Daniel Craig is the latest film Bond following in the footsteps of Sean Connery, Roger Moore and Pierce Brosnan.
Scarlett OHara was rated as the third most memorable character.
The performance by British star Vivien Leigh as the feisty southern belle in the epic Gone with the Wind made her the only female character in the top five.
Anthony Hopkins performance as Hannibal Lecter helped the cannibalistic serial killer rate fourth in the poll.
Indiana Jones, played by Harrison Ford, was named as the fifth most popular character.
More than 500,000 people took part in the survey carried out by ABC TV and People magazine.

“That’ll be the day.”
HHAHAHAHAHHAHAH!!! I loved that movie! As a matter of fact, I saw it not too long ago. I always that that Cloris Leachman and Harvey Korman made a great pair.
“Badgers, Badgers, we don’t need no stinking badgerss”
The rest of the film and Forest Gump is s**t.
AGREED Frantzie. Just a mindless movie that makes you laugh and makes you think, but there are thousands of those like that one.
Lol!
So how is it you even did?
Only because Gump wasn’t “full retard”.
Micheal was a terrible Godfather. In the end it was all about him. Thus he dies alone with the cat. Remember Tom Hayden asks if he’s going to kill everyone. Micheal responds “just MY enemies”.
I’m thinking that the older people may disagree with this, but a lot of younger people would agree. Most people under 30 haven’t seen a lot of the movies that are being mentioned in this thread. All of my teenagers know who Forest Gump is. They quote the movie.
In fact, my daughter just 2 days ago did a little presentation on Richard Nixon for her history class, and she added a scene from Forest Gump to her presentation.
I agree with this. It was a great movie. Just so many angles and just really exciting especially watching it the first time......after 50 times it gets a bit “old”, but man that first time was exciting. I know you don’t agree with me but watch it again and you might change you mind. You probably forgot about the movie since you “might” not have seen it since 1994.....Wow 17 years ago!!!!!
Are you kidding? The seen where Harvey Koorman is hitting the cured man with paper clips and putting in the Werewolf teeth is a classic.
“Those who are tardy do not get Fruit Cup.”
He thought by "taking care of family business" at the end of the first Godfather, he could move to Vegas and become legit, but of course all that did was ensure he would only have to deal with even more enemies and he could never get out.
Franzie.....I am surprised. It was not a lib movie at all. Don’t you remember he even got the medal of honor. It was a pro military movie.
