And they did. They did him in right at the alter. Clove his head right nearly in two.

The King swore he had nothing to do with it. Ya right!

Here’s another one - Archbishop of Canterbury Thomas Cranmer got burned at the stake in 1527.

Thomas a Becket was murdered as he was saying Mass by the knights or guards of the King who said in a fit of frustration, about his ol pal before the change in Thomas, “ Will no one rid me of this meddlesome priest!” The king, Henry, did not actually intend for the knights to actually murder this man and as a result did penance for it wearing sack cloth. The feast of St Thomas a Becket is 29 Dec.

According to Wiki his body was buried at Canterbury. His head, after being displayed on London Bridge, went to the church in Sudbury.

No mention of canonization. Not likely since he was Richard II's Chancellor and very unpopular.

I'm glad we put that to rest.

I always felt Cranmer deserved it for not defending Anne Bolyne. He knew the charges against her were false, but kept quiet to keep his job so he could “reform” the church.

He also could have insisted Mary was legitimate, as children of an annulled marriage are considered legitimate, or children from a divorced marriage are legitimate. But no, he backed the king and let her live in poverty with her mom...

So what goes around, comes around.

Since he was my ancestor, pardon me if I defer judgment. Tines were violent and the king had great power. By playing politics, Thomas was able to spread the belief that a personal knowledge of, if not relationship with, God was possible. He also provided direct lay access to the word of God. Because of him and others of his time, great changes occurred that rippled down the centuries.
