They’re cheap. Their ammo is cheap. Their ammo isn’t intended for shooting only things smaller than a poodle. The rifles are as durable as the Rock of Gibraltar, and about as simple as a rock to clean and repair.
While they’re as ugly as a witch who chased parked cars as a little girl, they *work*.
Did I mention that they were cheap?

My only real complaints are the sticky bolt which can be fixed by running a brass .45 brush on a drill motor up the chamber, and the kick.
I like a rifle that kicks, but it will beat you up.
Heck 8mm mausers have a slick bolt but they will beat you half to death.

These days, German K98’s are getting to be distinctly “not cheap.”

Great shooting , no doubt. But you probably could do the same with a Win. 70 in 3006, right?

Many Missouri hunting comrades show up empty handed at sunset... sitting in tree stand all day with fancy American-made rifle & scope... expensive ammo.
DTogo walks and shoots deer with $100 1938 Tula, iron sights, and "soft tab" Czech 54R.

If you can, have a look at a Czech VZ-24. I think their metallurgy is better.

I bought 8 cans and only have 3 left! I missed the trend too LoL
But I shot most of it in a PSL.
Otherwise my arm would have fallen off LoL

Two comrades notice in and out hole on both sides of deer, ask what I use.
What is the word... when they think of money on their rifle and much time in stand... chagrin?
DTogo also attach "lucky" spike bayonet.

With a couple pre-war Model 70’s in the safe, I’m not much of a surplus guy... although I wouldn’t mind a Winchester 1895 Carbine in .30-40 Krag.
To: NVDave
Sigh.... I had my eye on a perfect one a fews years back, still in arsenal paper with all the goodies for $235, I coulda got it for $200.
I have never seen a pristine example since.
The bluing was so deep...
