I too have stood on the deck of the USS MISSOURI when I was 12 years old. Mighty Mo was moored in Bremerton, WA at the time. I was a paperboy at the time and because of subscriptions I accumulated I won a trip to Seattle and Bremerton.
I’ll never forget standing near the plaque and reading those words commemorating the surrender.
My father-in-law was aboard the Mighty Mo and witnessed the surrender. He was stationed aboard a submarine and I guess crew members from ships in harbor were invited. Got a picture of the surrender in family photo albums.
Also, my ship, USS PIEDMONT (AD-17) was in Tokyo Bay at the time. Many years after the surrender, PIEDMONT became my home for 3 1/2 years.
Such memories are priceless!
AWESOME!
Enjoyed reading about your experiences back then, Dave! Memories are wonderful!
