George Steinbrenner famously refused to let Yankees players compete with any facial hair, or "unruly" haircuts. While those relatively manic standards were applied to professionals (extremely highly compensated professionals, at that), a similar measure is now being used to keep an eighth grader off his junior high basketball team.
According to a number of sources, the Indianapolis Star and Associated Press chief among them, the parents of a Greensburg (Ind.) Community Junior High School student have filed a lawsuit against the district citing discrimination against their son, who was kicked off the team because his hairstyle violated a code of appearance established by Greensburg High coach Stacy Meyer, pictured above, which was stipulated in the school's extra-curricular code.
TheIndyChannel.com reported the lawsuit claims coaches told the player he wouldn't be allowed on the court if he failed to cut his hair by a certain date. When the 14-year-old questioned why that was necessary, he was also told that he would be kicked off the team if his parents -- Patrick and Melissa Hayden -- protested the policy.

The Dweeb, of course there should be rules. But of *what possible interest* does an agent of the state have in telling a school kid how to style their hair?
It’s designed to teach him to submit to airport patdowns, to obey, to be a good sheep.
Those and baggy cords.
The rule needs to bear some semblance to necessity, and not just satisfy the stylistic aesthetic whims of a geezer.
If the kid performs, and it does not impede anyone else, then his hair is not business of any teacher. Im for the kid. So no, the true “liberal viewpoint” is the impulse to tell other people how they should live even though it does not affect you.
How about a rule that he must part it on the right?
This was an extracurricular activity. Play by the rules or don’t play.
“Sounds like it was too long.”
Those goldurn whippersnappers,,, lol
“Render unto Caesar what is Caesars”.
And by that, we are supposedly making God happy by submitting like sheep to every obnoxious micro-managing government rule thrown at us, regardless of how intrusive it is?
The alternative is backing every whining liberal that cries “Unfair!”. This kid didn’t HAVE to play. He CHOSE to but wants concessions so he can “FEEL good” about himself. If his ego is so tied up in his hair he has more problems than simply a lack of respect for rules and order.
“50 years ago his parents would have told him to comply or shut up.”
YEAH! And we could also do separate but equal too! We have to put up with so much freedom today. I still want someone to explain to me why a kids hair is the governments business unless it’s filled with lice. All i pretty much hear is that it pleases the grandmas and geezers, there in the bleachers.
“This was an extracurricular activity. Play by the rules or dont play.”
Sooo, in extra curricular world, the coach SHOULD be able to say, all kids part it on the right? lol,,,,
Yep, chino’s and blue oxford button down shirts.
The more hair there is the more likely it is to be filled with lice.
This was NOT a mandatory activity but like EVERY good liberal he wants rules and order changed to accommodate him. And you seem to think that's peachy. I don't. Liberals ALWAYS want everyone to accommodate their whine. I'm tired of "It's UNFAIR!"
Get a life! He was asked to cut his hair for cripes sake. Like neat and clean is gonna kill him!
This kid was simply wearing his hair how he wants. Busybodies hate that it doesnt look like the Hardy boys did, and stamp their feet that he must cut it or go away.
Who is this darned kid who thinks he can wear his hair whoever he wants at school??
Glad they are fighting liberalism. sarc/
An employer, i agree. But a school, even extracurricular, no way.
“Get a life?”
Go cook dinner,,
YThat's probably correct.
And wanted to participate in an extracurricular activity but chose NOT to comply with rules so that he could. So his ego demanded that the rules change for him because, God knows, it would hurt him to comply with rules. "I don't like them so I'll SUE! I LOVE my long curly locks! WAAAAAH WAAAH They want me to *gasp* CUT IT! Oh boo hoo hoo!""
You’re the one crying over a simple haircut. You and a spoiled brat. The truth hurt so much?
Maybe you should “get a life”, and not think you get to impose your HAIRSTYLE rules on the world!
The Prussians would agree with you. (Prussians were these real controlling Germanic types a while back)
Since there’s a dress code for guys not having long hair do you think there should be a dress code for girls having short hair? “Girlie, your hair is too short. You’ll have to quit the team” (reverse logic?)
Oh for crying out loud. A haircut! He knew the rules and he's suing over a simple haircut. Because baby doesn't want to.
Was Buckwheat busted for brandishing a blaring blade?
