Sounds like the same thinking that lead to Smoot-Hawley. How’d that work out?
At the time of “Smoot-Hawley”, America led the world in manufacturing and exports.
Things now, are exactly the opposite.
The result now, would be also.
We can try the Kellog-Bryand Pact again too since we are going for feel good solutions.
That's how Smoot-Hawley worked out.
One of the problems with an import tax is that we increase our own costs of production because we are no longer able to target the lowest cost producer whether here or abroad and take advantage of it.
The poor are hurt first, then the middle-class is wiped out, and the only people who have stuff are the rich with their private guard services.
The point of eliminating tariffs is two fold ~ (1) To cut costs of purchasing goods and services, and (2) To cut off revenues to the government.
Both ambitions are as desirable now as they were in the past.
Next, cut off more sources of revenue to the government and FORCE the government to quit wasting money on things that are none of their business.
