Europes oldest stone hand axes emerge in Spain Stone Age site -- Excavations conducted more than 30 years ago in this quarry in southeastern Spain, which includes an extensive sequence of sediment layers, yielded several hand axes that have now been dated to about 760,000 years ago, pushing back the emergence of stone tools in Europe.[L.
