For some reason, my mother was not given a "binder" per se while she was on the ESRD diet for 10 years.

She limited her intake of nuts, beans, meat, sodas and dairy products and I remember learning that some pill she took already (calcium?) helped bind phosphorus.

Itchiness, due to the phosphorus, really bothered her some times.
