The Albert Haynesworth saga just won't die. After playing in each of Washington's past five games, the $100 million defensive tackle is inactive for Sunday's game at the New York Giants.
The unofficial explanation from the Redskins is that Haynesworth, who has been a backup this season in Washington's base 3-4 defense, is ill.
The tension between Haynesworth and Washington's new coaching staff began on the start of the offseason conditioning program. Informed of the switch from the 4-3 scheme in which he had won All-Pro honors for the Tennessee Titans in 2007 and 2008 before signing his record, seven-year deal with the Redskins the following February, Haynesworth told coach Mike Shanahan that he was heading home and wouldn't be back if he was made to play nose tackle.
After accepting a $20 million bonus payment in April, Haynesworth further infuriated Shanahan by skipping the mandatory minicamp in June. However, he showed up on time for the start of training camp in late July.
Skeptical of the 6-foot-6, 350-pound Haynesworth's conditioning, Shanahan demanded that he run a series of sprints in a certain time. It took Haynesworth 10 days to finally meet the coach's standards and return to practice with his teammates.

Nice job of the “under-rated” Skins quarterback forcing that pass to Santana Moss. Glad he’s annoying the fans of another city. Just wish he played for the Giants.
The Redskins have laid down some serious greenbacks for some dubious and older players this season. They could be setting themselves up for some bad salary cap problems later.
Back in early 1995 a lot of 49ers fans, including myself, wished that George Seifert would decide to call it a day after his second SB championship so that Mike Shanahan could come off a stellar job as the 49ers offensive coordinator to become the head coach. But Shanahan appears to be a little out of touch and too rigid these days to me - if a coach proves his point by forcing an All-Pro defensive tackle off the starting line-up and weakening his team, maybe the point wasn’t worth proving.
The players are a different breed nowadays....thus that's why you see NFL Owners hiring young coaches so they can relate to the players better than old school coaches who came from a different era.
My beloved Redskins just suck.
Search for "Lay, lady, lay" and Albert Haynesworth on Youtube.
My buddy is a Skins fan. We both agree the Skins will not be competitive while Snyder is the owner.
Snyder apparently has so much mo0ney and fans keep buying his expensive “entertainment” that he doesn’t give a damn. At least football season is freed-up for many Redskin fans.
That is true.
I remember using one of those Madden video games on franchise mode and I managed to run the team into the ground, I mean totally, in a few years once.
Question for headline writer: So he is active against healthy Giants?
No just sickly midgets.
Dan Snyder is the common denominator for every losing Skin season.
He took the redskin spirit and made it a ‘corporate’ enterprise.
wish that jerk would just leave town.
I’m with you there. It’s been a long, steady decline since Gibbs retired the first time.
