I think it has more to do with the way muslims interweave sharia and religion.
There was a recent case in Switzerland, for example, where a man was acquitted of using physical force to compel his wife to have sex with him. He did use physical force, however. That's rape for a Swiss citizen.
His defense was that he was a studious and strict muslim. He said although he does respect Swiss law, his studies have convinced him that sharia is the best way of life for all people. The judge bought it.

Like the US, people here are tired of liberal judges. They want immigrants to follow the same laws they do. Frankly, they're pissed off.
That's just my opinion.
