Monarch's Log
"We have had some excitement while we were here. The gentleman travelling with us that is a commercial fisherman got his ear pierced! He received a spinning rod and reel for his 60th birthday and decided to try his had fishing for large mouth bass, and prceeded to hook his right earlobe."
Fishing rulz! ;^)
Got one caught in the meaty part of my thumb. Idiot doctor cut the hook to close to the skin and the rest of the hook embedded itself in my palm. After spending an afternoon at some redneck hospital upstate NY, I went home to jersey with a swollen and bloodied hand with a hook still in it.
My hand surgeon looked at it, nodded to a nurse who brought in three cocktails. One for me one for the doc and one for my hand. Hook was out in 10 minutes. My arse hurt more from the tetanus shot he gave me afterwards.
I pulled 45 pound stripers into the beach, had runins with maniacal bluefish and have fought sharks who wanted to turn me into their beyotch. Always got cut up, filled with fish guts and the only thing that kept us sane was ..... beer.
This was a snall mouth bass off my porch on the lake. first cast.
I hooked a friend in the head while casting a jitterbug. I almost got wobbly trying to get it out of his scalp, but he told me that it really didn’t hurt at all.
Then it was off to the ER. Hospital staff got a pretty good laugh out of it.
That’s how you keep from losing your hat when fishing in hurricane force winds. lol
The smaller fish are always the ones that get you.
Has anyone ever caught a fish with a Jitterbug?
LOL, never have, but they are sure pretty going through the water. It would seem with all the sputtering noise it should attract every bass within a mile, but it never does.
I never did. I've always believed that fishing lures caught more fishermen than fish. My best bassing was with 'safety-pin' spinnerbaits, and Rebel crankbaits. My best luck with surface lures was with jointed Rapala type lures.
I caught fish on a Crazy Crawler, My favorite lure was a Dying Flutter
Makes me think about the fishing scene in the movie Funny Farm.
Yup. Caught my second largest bass with it (7lb3oz). On most waters, any top water lure is a specialist. Best time is early summer and early autumn (you don’t want the surface water too hot or cold), sun touching the horizon to full dark and calm wind.
And don’t swim it continuously. Cast it to the spot. Let the ripples die out. Wait a bit longer. And a bit more. Then twitch it, once. Wait for the ripples to die out....repeat.
Few years back I was fishing in chest deep saltwater and hooked into a fast moving fish. While manuevering/stomping around during the fight, I felt a tremendous pain and pressure on my right ankle. Pulled my foot up to meet my hand, expecting to feel a chunk missing from a shark bite, but everything was in one piece - stingray sting. Still took the time to land the fish before hobbling into to the shore.
Painful sting - paced around in circles for hours. Too stubborn to go a walk-in clinic. If it ever happens again - I’m going straight to a walk-in.
All I can say about this story is OUCH!!. Fishing joke: Two guys in row-boat are fishing near a small bridge. Soon a funeral prosession comes along and one guy stands up, removes his fishing hat and bows his head until the prosession passes. “Gee, that was nice of you’’ his friend said. “Well’’ replied his friend “I was married to her for thirty years, it’s the least I could do’’.
