Oh well, sometimes we all need a little humility to remind ourselves how flawed we really are.Too bad our president doesn't show your humility...:o)

Some will see my admittance to the error, but many will not. Oh well, it is what it is.I read your mea culpa. I accept it as an honest mistake. It's understandable. The model in the video is probably a 40%-scale model, which means it is almost half the size of the real one. That translates into a "toy" airplane that's 8-feet long with a 9+ foot wingspan and weighs in at around 30 or so pounds. These use 10-20HP engines that swing 30-inch propellers. IOW, They're big enough to fool anyone at a distance, especially someone not familiar with the state of the model airplane world.
If you go to this Youtube video and watch the part where they take the model out of the lake after the crash, you'll get a pretty good idea how big they really are.

You sure it wasn't
this guy? I know most pilots look the same to those that aren't in the industry.

One Vike,
Please don’t feel bad about this. In fact, the only thing that had me go back and question it was one of our fellow Freepers technical observations. My first assessment was, “Wow, I didn’t know a plane could do that...kewl!”
You’re in good company, I probably would’ve thought the same thing as you. It was difinately an optical illusion. It was still a very cool video...thanks for posting!

We have the San Diego Air Show at Mirimar starting today. I wonder if this guy will be here?

I thought I’d seen it all. Amazing.

Now that I've read the whole thread, I see this was an R/C plane...fun to watch, though!
I still hope they have something like this at the Miramar Air Show. We do get both the Snowbirds and the Thunderbirds.
Ranking at the top of my favorite part is still the air and ground assault exhibition.....the wall of fire!! Love it every year!

I never would have thought it to be possible that an airplane could be made to do something I thought only helicopters could do
If you think that prop-standing is impressive when done by an acrobatic plane, try to get to an airshow where an F-22A is doing a demo flight.
Part of the routine is usually to hold the aircraft vertically on its exhaust (and sometimes even dance it up and down a little), then execute a
270 degree backflip seeming around it's center axis and then roar off.
There's also the
"Pugachev Cobra" maneuver where a jet aircraft executing a high speed pass is pitched up and back 100-110 degrees, seeming to fly backwards for a few moments before the pilot pitches forward and climbs out.
To: OneVike
I happen to think we were INTENTIONALLY punked. Anyone at the airshow would have become aware the plane was RC just by the mere fact the truth would have spread through the crowd rather quickly. Add the fact the thread author covered up the distinct RC engine sound with music and, well, a lot of us got played for suckers.

I’m w/you. I’m an R/C Pilot (AMA# 791825) and also know that this is at LEAST a 40% YAK 54, looks like a Carden aircraft, probably has at least a Desert Aircraft DA-50 engine in it. Looks like the pilot has a big ticket JR or Futaba radio as well.
Okay, the poster says it’s a “Real” plane, as someone who has 3D flyers in his Club (WWFC AMA# 449) and has Dean Pappas, who writes articles for Model Aviation magazine, this guy is a joke.
Prove it Buster.........

Just read through everything, Mea Culpa excepted, and I Apologize as well. R/C pilots get a bad rap sometimes and it doesn’t help us keep flying sites. Maybe you should take lessons? It’s a real relaxing hobby:-)

The video you link to is obviously FAKE!
Everyone knows he really flew a Sopwith Camel, and the video clearly shows a Jenny.

I am pinging my list with this apology for misleading everyone as to what I really thought was a full sized airplane doing an amazing aeronautical stunt.
Thanks to all who have already accepted the apology I extended in
comment #6. As I said, it was an obvious error. Well, obvious to those who have since educated me, but not to those like me who are less knowledgeable about model RC planes as O. D. Tucker pointed out.
The extensive knowledge at FR when it comes to various topics, in this case aviation and RC plane knowledge, leaves little doubt I was wrong. Plus I received a phone call from a certain individual who read my article and watched my video.
As I said I have amended my article to include the truth and my error.
Rodamala;
Thanks for the link to
Snoopy flying an RC, I LMAO watching it as I too was thinking along the lines of Nik Naym that Snoopy flew a Sopwith Camel. LOL
As for the video of the
"Pugachev Cobra" maneuver, that could be similar to what I and my wife might have saw on Saturday. So when I returned on Sunday for the interview with
Bill Braack and saw the
RC I thought was a real plane doing off to the side doing what I filmed.
Again, for those who still wish to believe my intentions were to fool people. Well you just don't know me. I have been a Freeper since early 1998, and I have a rather large ping list of followers.
,br /> What I am saying is that it is not beneficial to me to be purposely screwing with peoples heads.
As for the San Diego Air Show, it would be great to see an air show that has more to offer than we get at the
Air Show in our small community of Chico Ca. Maybe some day I will make it to one.
Again I would like to extend my heartfelt apology for misleading anyone, and thanks to those who have already accepted it. God Bless, Chuck Wolk (OV)

Chuck. As they say, poo poo happens. In the grand scheme of things, this doesn't even rate an oops - IMHO. We have much bigger fish to fry with the Election only a month away...
Now if only Obama would issue an apology. LOL
