Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Will Elude Kiss for 11th Straight Year
Sopt the Presses via Yahoo ^ | Sept. 28, 2010 | Caryn Ganz

Kiss loyalists, long the butt of rock-critic jokes, have a new reason to be rankled: the artists listed on the Hall of Fame's 2011 ballot, which was announced this morning, include the Beastie Boys, Neil Diamond, Alice Cooper, Bon Jovi, Donovan, Tom Waits, LL Cool J, Dr. John, the J. Geils Band, Darlene Love, Laura Nyro, Donna Summer, Joe Tex, and Chuck Willis. The Beastie Boys got a nod in 2008. Nyro, LL Cool J, and Summer were all nominated last year. Kiss is conspicuously absent, yet again.

Hard-rock icon Kiss released its self-titled debut in 1974, which means in 1999 the band became eligible for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. But Kiss wasn't listed among the nominated bands in 1999 -- or 2000, or even 2001, for that matter. In 2009, the theatrical band finally made the ballot, but it didn't rack up enough votes for induction, and fans fumed while ABBA and the Stooges received the honor instead.

from the very beginning this should have been called The Popular Music Hall of Fame.

That would not explain some of these guys, none of whom were either as popular as others of their time, or whose music would be termed 'popular':

Leonard Cohen, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, The O'Jays, The Dells Del Shannon, Jimmy Reed, Hank Ballard

J. Geils Band – Maybe

No "maybe" about it. Anyone seeing these guys live couldn't possibly think them unworthy. Some of the best live shows I've ever seen were from the J. Geils Band. "Whammer Jammer, let me hear ya Dickie!"

I hope Diamond and Cooper join them. The others......not much of a list. Donna Summer? LL Cool J?

What a mess Jann Wenner has made of the place.

That did not keep out Dylan or Cohen, or Simon, or Geffen, or Graham, or Spector or Alan Freed from getting in and Neil Diamond from being nominated.

More likely it's because Kiss is a Jooooooooooooooooooke.

With all the make-up people assume they're a novelty act.

No "maybe" about it.

I was on the fence, though, "I hear the Chimes" is a great song.

I discounted them a bit, mainly because I think the entrance requirements need to be raised.

But if the Ronettes, can make it, then just about anyone can.

I was meaning more that they were viewing rock music as equal to pop music. Not that everyone they let in was going to be in because they were popular. Just that the limitations on who could enter was more broad than just rock music (which isn’t exactly a narrow classification itself).

Alice Cooper - Hell yes.

The rest? Let 'em sing elevator music live.

LL Cool J?

Cut me two large slices of break. And a side order of WTF.

Frowning takes 68 muscles.
Smiling takes 6.
Pulling this trigger takes 2.
I'm lazy.

Hey, what’s more rock and roll than a bassist and lead singer who can preen his eyebrows with his tongue?

Well, at least Alice Cooper is a nominee this year ... for those who follow this R&R HOF thing (I don't, really), has he been a nominee in the past ???

Otherwise, The Coop *finally* needs to get the nod ... should have been *Elected* years ago !!!

GO COOP !!!

I'll never forget seeing J. Geils perform Whammer Jammer live. Amazing performance. Great band.

I'd also add Jethro Tull to the list. Can't understand why they aren't already in the Rock Hall of Fame.

You got that right, better at make-up than music.

Saw them on the Time MAchine tour this summer and it was 3 1/2 hours of heaven! They're still packing them in after 30+ years, sell millions of albums, won every award on the planet for musicianship, but they can't get into the Rock Hall of Fame! I think South Park should do an episode on this!

Disco sucks! (until you find out that girls like to dance...) How insulting that pop icons such as Domma Summer and Neil Diamond-—or rappers-—get nominations but not the guys who did Rock n Roll all night, ie it’s only rock and roll, but I like it??? Is this really the Rock n Roll hall of fame?
Must have been the “Kiss Army” stuff.....action figures.....

Back in the day I definetly saw my share of some great bands (and some not so great)

KISS is one of those bands. I've seen them three times, twice in smaller venues without make up, and once in a larger venue with. I'm really not much of a fan of their music, but went because of who they are.

To call them a Jooooooooooooooooooke and a novelty act really shows you have no clue or experience with which you speak.

KISS changed the way stage shows are done. Todays pyrotechnics at ANY concerts is directly a result of Kiss.

One thing I've noticed at a KISS concert, they have BY FAR...THE HOTTEST WOMEN. (More so even than Mötley Crüe).

Go to a KISS show today, and it seems 1/4th the crowd is under 18. And their heyday was 30 years ago. Talk about lasting power.

Kiss has sold more albums than 90% of those in the RARHOF.

When it comes to rock and roll MUSIC everybody claims the Beatles as the most pivotal. But when it comes to stage shows EVERY band will tell you its KISS.

You might not like their music, and might be offended by their lyrics, and might be turned off by their makeup and garb, but to disregard them offhandedly, the way you did, shows you have no clue what your talking about.

Not a big KISS fan either, actually I couldn't stand them in their 70's heyday ... I'm more of an Allman Brothers 'just stand there and play ... and play GOOD' .. kinda Rocker.

But over the years I've come to admire and even respect what KISS has done for Rock n Rool(sic) ... it isn't my cup of tea, but it has proven to be very successful and influential, and for that alone - KISS deserves to be in the R&R HOF

In defense of The Beastie Boys, all of their albums have been released to critical acclaim and generally very good sales. More importantly for what seems to distinguish rock music they play their own instruments on several of their albums. Their last album was entirely instrumental (and quite good).

"Sabotage" is my all-time favorite music video.
