Clay bullets are lighter than stones, and more reliable (because they are manufactured, they have a regular shape and size). Sling weapons were enormously popular.
You’d imagine that clay “bullets” would also fragment on impact so that even a miss would cause some damage and some panic/chaos as they rained down en masse.
