That is your obvious stance with your ‘we were not there’ ‘you cannot assume’ and ‘maybe the constants were not constant’ is that the universe is not under the sway of rational laws that are understandable and predictable, but that the laws are arbitrary and subject to change without notice.

Sorry if you are not cognizant of the inadequacies of your argument, but there it is.

You correctly point out that belief in a rational and predictable universe was a great philosophical contribution of Christianity (and Judaism) to science, and then you reject the idea that we can assume that natural laws were previously natural laws, and that universal constants are actually universal or constant.
