Bombay is now MumbaiYou had me until the last one... "Mumbai" isn't the Hindi pronounciation of "Bombay" -- it's a different name. The local authoriities actually renamed the City, because "Bombay" is a Portuguese term and the local ruling Hindu Nationalist Party wanted to replace the colonial name with a new Hindi name that sounded somewhat similar. So they invented "Mumbai."
Everything else you mentioned -- Peking/Beijing, Porto/Puerto Rico, Pakistan and Chile are all about pronounciation/spelling of agreed upon names.

Well in Chile and Puerto it is a Spanish pronunciation. So those of us who speak some Spanish are likely to say it that way.

I learned it “Belgrade,” but the city’s name is “Beograd.”
Why not just call it what the natives call it, rather than making up a new word?

Don't forget Nick-uh-rah-gwa is now Nee-keh-rrrrrahhhh-gwa. I've also noticed some now are saying May-hee-ko for Mex-ih-ko.
As for the "posturing" --- these days it's not just intellectual but has begun to take the form of bowing down. ;-)

I have a very Irish last name. I get VERY offended when liberals do not pronounce it with an Irish Brogue (even though I really can’t do it myself).
