One phenomenon is certain...... warm water will always flow to displace cold water. The heat transfer will drag the water along as the heat where it is warm seeks to move to where it is cold.
Heat transfer in the Oceans is the dominant climate factor by far. And they are just starting to grasp some of the deep ocean cycles. The conveyor belts are just a part of the picture. Coastal upwelling and down welling are also a dominant factor. There is a reason the cold water is coming up in the Eastern Pacific during a La Nina.
