Depends on the bear. If it is a nominally sized black bear and the shot is well placed a 45Colt will do nicely. Now large (>350#) blacks, grizzlies, and browns are a different story.

45 is OK in the house an 12ga would be brutal. Outside Ruger Super Redhawk 44 magnum or 458 Magnum. A well placed 45 after being startled out of sleep in the dark might be difficult.
