By the look of the responses, people dont know if hes got a dell or an HP, advice not to plug into a cable modem directly. Did he say he had a cable modem? ...Its the usual circus help because the guy isn't competent enough to search tech-help articles on the internet.
My advice is to use an external USB wifi antenna/adapter preferably with a software disk or a USB network adapter. This with the software will run automatically, then you can check the plethora of things that might be the problem. Which can include multiple driver installs mucking things up, unidentified network card,a service that is turned off...the list is endless and helping someone like this without being on the phone for him to be your hands and eyes....is pretty fricking ridiculous. Like this thread!
