WEST HAVEN A city man was charged with animal cruelty Thursday after neighbors heard a golden retriever yelping in pain.
Robert Barnes, 25, of 24 Lester St., second floor, was arrested around 5:30 p.m. Responding police officers found neighbors outside to report the sounds they had heard. Police found a 7-month-old golden retriever with severe injuries consistent with being beaten, Sgt. Martin Garcia said.
Neighbors reported hearing the yelps from 200 yards away. At one point, bangs, which witnesses believe was the dog being thrown against a wall or the floor, were loud enough to shake a neighbors kitchen windows.
The dog, which was limping and cowering, was taken to a veterinary hospital where it was treated for shoulder and leg injuries, as well as older injuries including scarring and infection, Garcia said. The dog, which belongs to an acquaintance of Barnes, will be re-evaluated this morning, Garcia said.
Barnes posted $7,500 bail, Garcia said, and is due July 13 in Superior Court in Milford.
We just paid $185 to have our rescued, best dog ever, boxer euthanized, creamated and returned to us for burial at home.
One of the saddest days of my life.
Wait till they're in a bar.
A Golden Retriever?
There is no more kind, loving animal on earth than a Golden Retriever.
This guy needs to be thrown against the wall a few times.
I miss both of our Retrievers. Their jobs were to make us happy, and no animals ever did their jobs better than Gulliver and Maverick.
Oh... my eyes are leaking again. I hate when that happens.
This is not to take anything away from Tucker, our Australian shepard / ??? mix. He can be a terror, but he’s as friendly as they come!
Changing dogs every other year? Sounds to me they view the dog as a fashion accessory.
Some people change spouses every other year. Some people get rid of their kids and then make more.
25.
Let me see, coat him in pig fat, bury him up to his neck and let your favorite pack of dogs have their way.
I prefer giving them a taste of their own medicine... With a cat-o-nine tails or a morning star.
I bet I could ‘cure’ him in ten....
I bid 50 seconds. But I’d hurt him bad.
Dear God I wouldn’t be able to restrain myself for even 10 seconds. My mother said to never ever trust ANYONE who is mean to an animal. Boy, was she right.
You are right. This dog needs to be with people who will constantly show him he is loved. He needs attention, stroking, the best comfortable bed and place to call his own. Soothing music when he goes to bed at night...soft, cuddly toys for him to snuggle with, fresh water, good, healthy, nutritous food, mega greetings when the new owners come home, nice rides in the car and a nice big yard to roam. Big hugs from his owners and lots of kisses too. Constant pats and comforting phrases like good dog, I love you over and over, sweet puppy, etc...silly? Yes, but...this dog will respond to these kind and loving phrases every time. I hope and pray the dog is taken from whomeve has him. He doesn’t deserve to have such a precious animal and the dog certainly above all else...deserves better. I hope there is a follow up to this story so that we all know the Golden is being cared for and loved as stated above. I will say a special prayer that he will be OK physically and mentally. Love can go a long way and with it he will learn to trust those he knows truly do love him.
Thank God for people like you all over the world. You did what you could for him and made his life easier and happier for him. I’m so glad you kept him for yourselves because you knew hiw background and understood him. That’s so important after all he had been through. That kind of abuse is embedded and so the abused animal needs to be understood and treated with gentle kindness and love and you did just that. Am sure you loved him and now miss him. That’s natural. You DID the right thing though.
Am sorry you are no longer in the business. Can see how you can get burned out and can lose faith in humans. You have so much to give and yet can understand how hurtful it is to have to see these kinds of hurts inflicted on beautiful innocent creatures who want nothing more than to love and be loved in return. thank you on behalf of so many for the love and kindness you gave over the years to so many in need.
You will have a special place in heaven that’s for sure.
Bless you.
Amen.
I just don’t like people very much, sometimes.
Oh isn’t THAT the truth? They aren’t even people.
Blow torch and ball peen hammer?
just looked up a photo of a Walker Hound. Darling...just darling. Thank you for saving this beautiful girl and long life together. :)
