“Besides, Hollow points are just plain better than FMJ.”
Under Geneva Convention rules hollow point’s are outlawed for war use....and I personally obect to them in both the Law Enforcement and civilian arenas. I’m quite sure that I am in a the minority in this regards.
My thought has always been the hollow point proponet guys are the ones using marginally performing calibres (like the 9mm, ducks) in an attempt to increase first shot effectiveness.
.45 ACP did/does not have that problem in it’s original military (ball/jacketed) loading.
The key to any weapons use and effectiveness is, and has always been, PRACTICE. Shot placement is key, especially in close quarters combat where the pistol is most likely to be used.....hollow point ammo can’t make up for the rounds inheirent lack of power, nor the in expertness of the user.
I agree but I grew in the days when Glazers were what you wanted to shoot.
Placement has always been key and getting that additional boost from an expanded and fragmented projectile, that actually stops, somewhere in the body, after bouncing around seems like a good choice.
It just doesn’t make sense to use FMJ, if you can afford Hollow Point. It’s not like you are using Hollows at the range, that would be a little more expensive than necessary for practice.
Bigger holes make more sense to me.
Kinda like the difference between a 5.56 and a .308. I love .308 for it’s multi-use capability and it will make a bigger, rounder hole.
Like the difference between 12 gauge and .410. Pretty sure I am going to shoot 12
First and always.
Forgot the Geneva Convention rule. It’s just a rule and doesn’t apply to me or what I feel my requirements are for insuring I live.
hollow points were invented to make a high velocity bullet stop faster in flesh. A bullet that zings clear through the (living) target transfers less energy to the target than one that expands and stops rather abruptly. It’s like the difference between stabbing someone with a needle vs hitting them with a ballpein hammer. The hammer blow will more drastically affect a person’s ability to retaliate.
45ACP is not a high velocity round an thus the advantages of a hollow point projectile over a non hollow point are much less(or non existent) in 45ACP vs 9mm, which is extremely high velocity in comparison.
The advantages of hollow points in 45ACP are even less when one considers the FACT that typical 1911 45ACP reliability suffers SIGNIFICANTLY when loaded with hollowpoints.
