MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Kevin Stringfellow will never forget the frightening attack by two pit bulls he suffered Tuesday as he walked from a neighborhood store.
"I saw two dogs coming toward me, and started grabbing me and biting me real hard," he said Wednesday.
Two pit bulls latched on to him, leaving 52 holes in his arm. The dogs even left holes on Stringfellow's pants.
"One of them was just tearing my arm up," he said. "The other dog was biting me on my leg. I thought I was already dead cause I never had a pit bull bite me."
Stringfellow had to use an empty beer bottle to fight for his life.
"I'm telling them get away from me. Get away from me. Found a bottle and started hitting them real, real, hard," he said.
Unfortunately, not everyone who was attacked by the dogs was as lucky as Stringfellow. William Parker, 71, had a heart attack and died after the dogs attacked him. Parker, his daughter, and two paramedics were also bitten.
The dogs belong to Bernard Humphrey, a resident of an apartment complex on North Manassas who was arrested Sunday after police discovered he failed to update his address for the sex offender registry. A girlfriend was left to care for the dogs after Humphrey was taken into custody.
"They shouldn't have those dogs in these apartments in the first place with all these children walking around here," Stringfellow said.
Stringfellow considers himself lucky, despite a unfortunate tragedy.
"I thank God," he said.
The dogs remained locked up Wednesday at the Memphis Animal Shelter.
Several hundred years ago when I was thirteen I was attacked by two dobermen pinchers (I’m sure that’s not spelled right). The saw me when they were about 40 yards away and immediately started running at me. I knew my only chance was to show them no fear. I just stared at them and somehow kept from being scared. They were running as fast as they could but when they got about 10 yards away they both suddenly skidded to a halt in the gravel. They just stood there for a moment and then slowly walked off. I was very lucky.
You would rather be attacked by a dangerous dog than carry a gun? You really need to re think that. Until you get some practice with your gun you could carry a can of wasp spray and you can blind them when they are still 20 feet away.
What a stupid post.
Wanna go to the range with me and see how well I shoot?
Nevermind, just keep your advice and take a friggin’ hike, pal.
A two year old boy was killed by his family’s pit bulls yesterday, about three blocks from our house.
There should be some kind of education program for people that want to keep dogs that have such strong jaws and necks. I don’t blame the dogs, I’ve never had any problem with any dogs, but you do need to have some understanding of k-9 behavior.
