Mel Gibson's Career Seems Over
The Daily Beast ^ | 07/11/2010

Posted on 07/11/2010 9:27:31 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

Mel Gibson seemed to weather the media firestorm that followed his drunk-driving arrest and anti-Semitic rant in 2006.

A handful of Hollywood types called for a boycott, but Gibson’s apology tour somewhat smoothed things over. But the latest example of the actor’s bigotry—tapes of him threatening his girlfriend with awful racist and sexist taunts—is surely the final nail in the coffin. Gibson’s been dropped by his agency, William Morris Endeavor, just after his longtime agent Ed Limato died.

He hasn’t been a bankable star much recently, even though peers like Bruce Willis still nab action roles. Gibson may be able to make movies under his Icon production banner, but who would consider working with Gibson worth the risk to his or her reputation? Though he may have an international audience left, and could make a movie exclusively for another continent, who in North America would bankroll it?

What's the big deal about the PASSION ? This isn't the first time the life of Christ crucifixion was depicted on film. Count them --- THE KING OF KINGS, THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD, JESUS OF NAZARETH, etc.

ALL of the above films recount the Passion, the teachings of Christ, etc. Why this obsessive focus on Gibson's film ? What makes it DIFFERENT ?

It seems to be an unwritten rule in hollywierd that religious films were tolerated in the 50s 60s and maybe early 70s but after that no more.

I guess it's the same reason why in any movie or TV show, I've noticed that it's OK to be a Christian if you're depicting a historical time. But, if you're depicting a modern person who's a Christian they always have to be portrayed as unbalanced in some way. Either they're fanatic and hateful, they're pedophiles (especially if it's a Catholic priest) or they're "intolerant". A good example of this might be the movie Cape Fear. Remember the old Gregory Peck version the guy was just a psycho. In the Robert DeNero version they made sure to point out that the killer was also an evangelical Christian. Why the change?

Related to this, compare how muslims are portrayed. Am I imagining it or is it true, even if a muslim is portrayed as a terrorist, they're always noble in some way. They're almost never the two dimensional characters that Christians are portrayed as and they usually have some small redeeming quality.

Maybe I'm just being over sensitive, and there are exceptions, but that's the trend I see.

You gave one heck of a list. Now let’s play Sesame Street and add Mel Gibson’s name to the list.

Now sing :

“One of these is not like the others,
One of these does not belong,
Can you tell me what’s not like the others,
Before I finish my song....”

“Mel committed the greatest sin known to man, he used the “N” word.”

When did it become a sin, i’ve heard and used it all my life.

I don’t know, Sandra Bernhardt threatened Sarah Palin would be gang-raped by her ‘big black brothers’ if she came to New York and she’s still working.

She didn’t use the n-word and she’s a liberal, so I guess if she stereotypes blacks as gang rapists it’s a pass.

But why, really, is his rant to his girlfriend our business? It really isn’t... we all need to worry less about people like Gibson and more about people like Obama — who the media is much less interested in uncovering the dirt on.

The only thing that can save his career is to come out for gay marriage and hold Obama fundraisers.

It does appear this tape was of a “private” in home conversation between husband and wife...call it whatever one will...what we say to one another in the privacy of our homes should stay there and not be open to public scrutiny.

However it appears also the wife was trying to obtain evidence of abuse from her husband. Taped the conversation and directly or indirectly slathering it across the media where it has no business being.

I don't care what Gibson says in his home and frankly what he or others might say in public...those who stand in the pulpit preaching tolerance are the least intolerant of all!

Every individual has the right and or privilege to say and believe what they want in our society now. It is those who can't handle “life” and the varied opinions of others who cry and whine the loudest.....the media is the most guilty of this....we would be better off ignoring them.

Unfortunately the mindless masses cannot think or deal with life anymore without a host of ridiculous and frankly stupid laws in an attempt to babysit them...they do not and cannot think for themselves, nor arrive at any conclusions, unless someone is telling them how they should so.

We have arrived at madness in our nation and this next generation will surely take us the rest of the way down. They have zip understanding of life and most are living in a fantasy world that does not exist....rather one which plays entirely on their emotions and comfort of those emotions. They are still living in the childhood days of..”Play nice with the other children in the sandbox” never learning how to stand up for themselves nor the skills to do so in such a way as to survive. They are still in the blame gain and I don't see that change ahead.

Thanks for “tolerating “ my rant. One does get fed up with the nonsense...and it is just that!

There are 2 kinds of blacks, negroes and ni**ers.

Taught that by a black employee 50 years ago.

He used it against other deadbeat employees regurally.

At the link:

A spokesperson explained the decision: "Jennifer Lopez would never knowingly support any state, country, institution or regime that was associated with any form of human rights abuse. "After a full review of the relevant circumstances in Cyprus, it was the decision of management to withdraw from the appearance. This was a team decision that reflects our sensitivity to the political realities of the region."

. . . . hence the question:

Who is Ari Emmanuel and why should anyone give hime/her/it a second thought?

Gibson used his own money to make Passion and that movie returned billions IIRC.

He doesn’t need any one to to fund his movies or his career.

So, the guy’s got a temper. He needs to work harder at controlling it.

Anger isn’t a crime and we shouldn’t fall into the Liberal trap of making it one.

He could make good on these publicized, idiotic outbursts without playing the PC hand. There are plenty of meaningful issues out there.

Gibson made another film after THE PASSION entitled APOCALYPTO.

Set in Yucatan, Mexico, during the declining period of the Mayan civilization, Apocalypto depicts the journey of a Mesoamerican tribesman who must escape human sacrifice and rescue his family after the capture and destruction of his village.

The film features a cast of Indigenous Mexicans and some Native Americans, and its Yucatec Maya dialogue is accompanied by subtitles.

The Budget was $40 Million. The film made $120 Million.

[ They aren’t making a Passion of the Christ II? ]

True.. Jesus "coming back" walking thru walls(Acts) and appearing in other strange ways(Acts) could make a killer sci-fi flick... even better than the first movie.. What Jesus did AFTER he was crucified was just as bodacious as what he did before his "death"..
