Mel Gibson's Career Seems Over
The Daily Beast ^ | 07/11/2010

Posted on 07/11/2010 9:27:31 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

Mel Gibson seemed to weather the media firestorm that followed his drunk-driving arrest and anti-Semitic rant in 2006.

A handful of Hollywood types called for a boycott, but Gibson’s apology tour somewhat smoothed things over. But the latest example of the actor’s bigotry—tapes of him threatening his girlfriend with awful racist and sexist taunts—is surely the final nail in the coffin. Gibson’s been dropped by his agency, William Morris Endeavor, just after his longtime agent Ed Limato died.

He hasn’t been a bankable star much recently, even though peers like Bruce Willis still nab action roles. Gibson may be able to make movies under his Icon production banner, but who would consider working with Gibson worth the risk to his or her reputation? Though he may have an international audience left, and could make a movie exclusively for another continent, who in North America would bankroll it?

It's funny, people like Sean Penn can cavort with the likes of Hugo Chavez and Castro and they're Hollywood idols. Roman Polanski rapes a 13 year old and all the show biz bubble heads apologize for him.

Not to excuse what Gibson said, it shows a true lack of class but since Che' is such a big icon to the left, especially Hollywood, maybe Gibson would be given a pass if he simply quoted Che

I recently rented Edge of Darkness and it was an outstanding film! Gibson was in top form. I think it worked because he played his character with a little bit of crazy.

I don't know if this film was profitable but it definitely served to remind me that for all the recent bumps in Gibson's personal life (indeed, mostly self-inflicted), he is still a helluva entertainer.

I wonder how many of these people writting about how his career is over would feel about having their private spats at home be made public? I’ sure we would find many things to hold over their heads if the same happened to them.

“Getting involved with a Russian goldigger wasn’t going to end well!”

Yup!

His rant was not flattering but he was objecting to her dressing like a slut and being phony - a “synthetic person”. She set him up and TAPED it. She knew him well enough to KNOW what he'd say.

Honestly, Id’ hate to have someone tape me with some of the things I say ... take a lesson from this.

What's ironic is is that the LIBERALS that decry this are WORSE than Mel! Ever hear how LIBERALS talks about Bush or Cheney? The double standard applies. In the situation of Mel, he wasn't THINKING with his big head and literally got screwed from every perspective. The fact that she is a home wrecker didn't matter. BTW, I don't believe he ever married her. So he'll just have child support to pay.

I, for one will see a good movie if he makes one.
If he makes a crappy one, I will not go see it.

Hollywood stars have said much worse in recent years. I have my own list of actors whose product will never again be bought by my family

Exactly. He has painted a huge target on him. Pray he repents.

Well, I am on his side on this. She is a gold-digging tart, and he assumed this was a PRIVATE conversation. His biggest mistake was having anything to do with her. It was deceitful for her to tape this conversation.

He is exactly right-she dresses like a hooker, and he is upset over the implants and his baby nursing, etc. His rant was no different than what most men would say once they realized what they were dealing with. It was a lapse in judgment in the first place to have a relationship with someone like her.

Sorry to see this happen to him now in his life. He had a great wife and family and things have spiraled down for him since his divorce. Somewhere there is a good woman out there who will be able to steer him in the right direction.

Gibson started out crazy and flakey. His stock character when he started was as a slightly deranged good guy.

For the middle part of his career, I think he was fighting desperately to keep his sanity. His three signature movies, Braveheart, the Patriot, and We Were Soldiers, were about a man who desired a safe family life, but ended up in the middle of chaotic battle. In the Patriot, in particular, his character had engaged in heinous acts during the indian wars, and was fighting that part of himself in his early refusals to take part in the rebellion.

During the time he was making these movies, he built his own church and attended masses in Latin. After the Passion of the Christ, he seemed to come unhinged again.

I think those three movies were somewhat autobiographical, in that his characters, while professing to want the safe family life, actually seemed far more alive when engaging in wild acts of violence. I know whenever I watched them, during the early setup, I was going, "Yeah, yeah, got the family. Go kill somebody, Mel." In his real life, the desire to become crazy was internal, rather than forced on him by Longshanks or the British army.

The Passion of Christ made him a target, too, in Satan’s eyes — and others’. Not to excuse him; he’s making some really terrible decisions these days.

The point I find interesting about this is assuming Gibson is a Christian, people need to realize, we all are humans, we make bad choices, do bad things, continue to sin...so to speak.

I don't excuse Gibson or anyone from this, but you just know evil grates on a guy like this...

Talented actors are often tormented by inner demons. Substance abuse and all manner of dysfunction are hand-in-glove with the trade.

Stop and think about just how many poor behaviors and cockamamie beliefs are not just tolerated but accepted and even touted in actors and actresses today.

Then, stop and think about the almost mind control being exerted here, due to Mel Gibson saying and thinking things deemed unacceptable.

Either he’s a good actor worth seeing or he’s not. I’m personally sick of being subjected to some amateur indoctrination by every singer and actor. They don’t know squat.

Mel Gibson, to my knowledge, does not attempt to convert people to using sexist taunts or abusive behavior. Leftists in the same position of influence do.

Lay off the guy. How well would you fare if your every move was under a microscope? Ever uttered anything that would set the media to tut-tutting and condemning? How many similar rants have been given a pass for people who are politically correct? I can think of several.

Since Hollyweird alleges itself to be the gold standard of free speech and artistic expression, why should anyone worry about working for Mr. Gibson?

Of course the reality is 90% of them are dumb, intolerant, vindictive and full of hate. See the above "journalist" suggesting Mel be blacklisted.

Mel can self-finance his films but he still needs to find a distributor for them. Of course, he could always go the direct-to-DVD route, like Steven Seagal has been doing lately.

And he’s a man who humiliated and threw away his loyal wife for a gold digging tart.

Which puts him below the gold digging tart in my book

Gibson certainly has his problems and I sure wish he’d recognize them and work them out.

As for his comments, big deal. They were said in the heat of anger and in what he believed was a private setting. Heck, I’m not a racist, don’t care if folks think I am, and I no longer drink. However, if some of my privately spoken words regarding Obama, his tribe and the 90+% of the Black drooler’s that voted for him were made public, the New Black MooslimEs would be camped outside of my house.

I’m far more concerned about Gibson’s alcohol, and perhaps substance abuse, as well as his obvious anger management issues, than what might come out of his mouth during a fit of anger and/or a drunken stupor. His personal success, money, fame and fortune has not made him happy, we are seeing the results of that unhappiness. IMHO

I love what he has done with his talent, I will continue to love his work, past or in the future... if he has one.

I wish him well.

Thanks for posting. Anyone can see that this was a complete mismatch. He had a temporary lapse in judgment and did his thinking with his other head. When he finally figured it out, he blew his stack and she taped him. He told her he did not love her. Hell hath no fury.......

We can go down the list:

Hell the lot of them.

Getting caught on tape using the n-word (and in the context of gang rape) will kill a career, real fast.

Or earn you a Grammy for best rap album.
