This is an overview of Religion and the founding of our country that is an exhibit in the Library of Congress. I thought it appropriate to post it on this 4th of July weekend.

Is it necessary that any one should [ask], Did General Washington avow himself to be a believer in Christianity?" As well may we question his patriotism, his heroic devotion to his country. His mottos were, "Deeds, not Words"; and, "For God and my Country."
Nelly Custis-Lewis (Washingtons adopted daughter)
It is impossible to rightly govern a nation without God and the Bible.
George Washington
What students would learn in American schools above all is the religion of Jesus Christ.
George Washington. [speech to the Delaware Indian Chiefs May 12, 1779]
"To the distinguished character of patriot, it should be our highest glory to add the more distinguished character of Christian"
George Washington. [May 2, 1778, at Valley Forge]
Rebellion against tyrants is obedience to God.
Ben Franklin's personal motto.
"We have this day restored the Sovereign to Whom all men ought to be obedient. He reigns in heaven and from the rising to the setting of the sun, let His kingdom come.
Samuel Adams

Thanks for posting this. Later I will ping it out and add some quotes I have.
Excellent discussion. Regular leftists and liber(al)tarians love to cherry pick to try to support that God-hating bias but they are easy to destroy, as has been done on this thread!

" the United States of America were settled by men and women of deep religious convictions who in the seventeenth century crossed the Atlantic Ocean to practice their faith freely."Make no mistake about it. Many of those who came to practice their faith freely had no intention of extending that freedom to anyone else.
