Good morning! My friend from the Philippines was using my computer to talk to her daughters, I’m a little late.

It’s muggy. (For Vegas.) I think we’re going to have another scorcher today, which is not going to be good because of the cloud cover. Unngghhhh!

Seaman Anoreth, still afloat, not in jail for being sarcastic on the streets of orderly Singapore. Sigh.

****

We did go underway [rather than to the brig]. There were some pretend boardings, plus a few drills of various sorts. Fire drills, mostly. I'm an investigator for them, which means I wander around with an air tank on my back looking for fires and such. Rather uncomfortable. Firefighting tanks weigh about 40 pounds, which is a little less than half my own weight. Plus the smallest rubber boots they have on board are a size 9. I trip a lot. We did a gun exercise, too, or we were supposed to. Actually we sat around in the sun at midday for three hours wearing flak jackets and long sleeves, whereupon the remote jetski pulling the target we were supposed to shoot at broke down. We didn't fire a shot. Rather disappointing.

Then we came back. Myself, Cousins, and Julia (the aforementioned friend from boot camp) went to the exchange to buy toothpaste, among other things. Then we went to the Terror Club planning to get dinner and a few beers. Unfortunately, we accidentally wandered into our Weapons and Supply officers' going-away party and ended up getting smashed with the entire wardroom and most of the weapons department. This wasn't really a bad thing. I distantly recall talking to the Captain about ... something. He was pretty drunk too, else he wouldn't have stopped to chat with a couple non-rates and a GM3. He said we probably weren't going to Wake. Instead we are stopping at San Francisco for a couple days. That sounds okay to me, I guess. Also, something about how cigars were okay to smoke on occasion and how I was probably too small to drink whiskey, so don't make a fool of myself. Not sure why he picked out me in particular. Cousins was far more drunk than I was.

Afterwards he got distracted and wandered off. Then Bosn and one of the JO's got drunk enough and started buying me and Cousins drinks. After nine-o-clock the bartender figured out that we were all from a Navy ship (eh, close enough ...) and started making the drinks really strong. My rum and coke was rum with a dash of coke for the right color. After several of these, me and Julia were pretty much gone. Nobody noticed. The officers made fun of us for being non-rates. We made pithy comments back. Respectfully, of course. Bosn told me that if I don't go to A-school soon he's going to throw me over the side. He didn't say anything to Cousins, who has been on the GM-A school [GM = gunner's mate] list almost as long as I have. Not fair. Then it got to be ten-thirty and one of the chiefs told us to leave. We did.

Duty tomorrow. Will be boring again.

I have a hunch that if Seaman Anoreth ever sits down to write stories of her missadventures at sea, that they will have all the proper flavors of truthiness.

And that they will be berry hootiful.

She can already drink like an Admiral. And I think she’s even shorter than Hyman Rickover.

Before Seaman Anoreth writes her memoirs, she needs to read this book:

It is possibly the funniest single thing I have ever read in my life. I laughed until the tears ran down my face and the dogs stared at me.

You’re welcome. I guess a seaman has to do something for fun.

I never thought being drunk was fun. Never was even tipsy.

When at my “A” school, they found out I was going to be station in Taipei where lots of . . . uhhh . . .

various kinds of “fun” could be easily and cheaply had . . .

they said it was a good duty station wasted on a Christian.

Loved spending time with locals and missionaries and the hobby shop.

I grew out of getting drunk a long time ago. Never cared for other types of “fun” - when I read articles about contemporary women’s lives, even women my age, I often feel like they’re about aliens.

Foreign travel would be interesting, but I’m very attached to American plumbing. DP and I watched a show about Nepal last night, and I was thinking, “We could see pretty mountains in Colorado!”

I like our plumbing, too!

I don’t mind being in new places. Can really enjoy it.

Have gotten to the place where the hassles of GETTING THERE are not so worth it any more.
