If 'they' told me that tomorrow morning I was going to be dropped on the surface of an alien planet and could only take one rifle with me there's no doubt in my mind that I'd pull one my AK's out of the safe.
And don't let anyone tell you they're no good beyond 200 yards. If you take your time and learn, really learn how to shoot your AK you can score consistent hits on man sized targets well past 300 yards with one.
They won't be 'one hole' hits, but hits they will be.
Mine puts 'minute of bad guy' hits on targets at that distance.
Don't get me wrong, I love my AR. It's a precision ass-kicker capable of putting a bad guy down at ranges in excess of 500 yards. But you can't toss your AR into a muddy pond, pull it out a week later, kick the bolt open, and rock and roll with it like you can an AK.

I second the FN-FAL option! Mine will shoot (scoped) inside of 1 1/2" with 150gr Federal loads.

I have both. Accuracy wise the ar wins hands down. The ak is harder hiTting.

I would like to know where to acquire some as well. I have 2k+ rounds of the BH SMK 77gr .223 red box for my Semi Auto M4’s, but would love to get my hands on the 5.56 Mk 262’s.

I would love to have my old M-14, and would HAVE one if they hadn’t put that damn selector switch on it, thereby making it a class 3 weapon and restricted. the knock-offs with the new semi-auto receivers are excellent but too pricey.

“Depends on use. Close up, AK. Need some distance, M-16.”
On the nosie.

What vest? You stand 100 yds from my SKS with your vest.Sounds like a "Hold muh beer and watch this" opportunity.

I have to admit I've never been a fan of the M-16. The ones we used in boot camp were old and worn out.
I have 2 Ak-47's in my gun safe. I like the reliability of the weapon. An earlier post mentioned getting a milled receiver. That is spot on advice.

Modern body armor, with the trauma plates, is WAY better than our old flak jackets. I've seen a War Porn of an Army Medic taking a bullet in the vest from an AK, which knocks him down. He gets up, winded but OK, and he winds up working on the rag head who tried to kill him. Trauma plates work.
(I'm too old. I would have let the goat humper bleed out.)

How about for somebody that can’t spend $1000+ on a long gun?

Keep one well cleaned indoors and (in case the local or federal Geheime Staatspolizei come knocking) the other buried out back under a flower bed. You already know which one goes where.

I just googled up a price of 60 dollars a BOX of 20 on those. That's a bit too rich for my blood.
Have you considered buying the bullet and rolling your own? Putting the mil-spec crimp on them might be an issue for you. I'm not aware of a tool that does that.
But I'd think that if you used the appropriate primer, say the CCI 'hard' variety, you'd be alright in a squirt gun.

A too heavily oiled AK throws crap into the shooter's eyes.
And it makes a very distinctive sound when fired...
Ever see the video of when Mikhail Kalashnakov met Eugene Stoner?
The conversation turned to the 5.56mm round. Kalashnakov got irked with Stoner and said, IIRC, “I blame you for this! Everything was fine with the 7.62 mm round until you came along!”

How about for somebody that cant spend $1000+ on a long gun? You couldn't do much worse than a Mosin Nagant IMO. They're running about $150 a copy at gun shows. Throw in a tin or two of ammo for less than $200 and you're doing pretty damned well IMO.
For a sidearm look into the Tokarev. They're about $225 a copy or so and ammo is similarly priced to the Mosin fodder. So for less than a grand you've got yourself a battle proven bolt gun and a sidearm. You can't beat that with a stick.
