Longhorns got what they wanted

Nice poker face, Lady Gaga.

Way to go all in there, Bevo.

Oh, we were braced for Expansiogeddon. Texas was going here. Texas was going there. Everyone wanted Texas. Texas to the Pac-10 was a done deal. Texas was going to topple all the dominoes because Texas held all the cards.

Well, then Texas got its bluff called. And guess what? When it came down to the moment of truth, Texas pushed away from the table, stayed right where it was. Texas fold ’em.

Don’t get me wrong. Thank goodness. The Big 12 (now 10) somehow hanging on saved college football as we know it. It kept regions that made sense intact. It kept Iowa State, the Kansases, Mizzou and Baylor from being blown right off the map.

And so we’ll hear a lot about how Texas “saved” the Big 12, and it did. About how Texas made out like a bandit. And oh, baby, it did.

About how Texas got exactly what it wanted. Yeah, it did. It definitely did.

But that’s the point. This is what Texas wanted. Superconference? No thanks. No longer being the lone superpower? Uh, no, not for them. Living in a league which might feature clashes of titans most every week? Nah. Having to actually count the votes? Please.

No, when it came time to “call,” Texas was bluffing. Texas was never leaving. This was what Texas wanted all along.

This presents an easier path to a national championship than would membership in a super league.

That's probably a much bigger factor than has been generally discussed. I think if anything like a 'super conference' did exist, fans would tire of it. There could be only one undefeated team after a conference championship game. We have that in twelve team conferences, but in sixteen or larger conferences, that would eliminate several big names, and there would be no end to the whining and complaining from every team that had one loss, or even two or three losses, making a case for the championship game or a BCS bowl.

Years ago, all the 'best minds' were pushing all sorts of business mergers, acquisitions, symbiosis and diversification. But after a decade or so, many of those transactions went sour, never blended well and were deemed failures and eventually undone in one way or another. I think this merger mania and expansion mania in college football would up the same way.

Mega-conferences might diminish fan interest rather than increase it.

All true. But UT's position in this is like being the QB - you get more of the credit when things go well and you get more blame when things go bad.

They got the biggest payout - they get the biggest criticism.

this was essentially a dry run for UT

I hope that it will not be 4 Super Conference's as some are proposing. There are several Senators sitting in the dark watching and waiting to pounce on the tax free status universities enjoy.

Not to change the topic but I noticed on your About Page that you are a TexTech alum. The reason I bring it up is that during last years season 4 filming of Friday Night Lights here in Austin, I met Mike Leach. He was making a cameo appearance

Leach is quite the character, no doubt. Mixed feelings about his departure, but I’m satisfied with Tuberville.......so far.

I was just thinking maybe the Big 12 could rename itself the SouthWest Conference.

Bbbbut, I just pulled my Big 12 gear off e-bay thinking we were headed to the Pac 10. I've got to put it back on e-bay?

Yep, Texas/Oklahoma game winner gets the Auto-bid to the BCS if they are rank right(my guess top 20 or 15, auto BCS Champ Game bid if in top 10).

and NO Conference championship game. Rules say a conference must have 12+ teams

That’s a good one! The sad thing is that the UT could probably rename the conference whatever it wants and my fellow Okies would not object. At least not if they were thrown a crumb or two.

Oh, and every team in the Mack 10 will have to be played and in Basketball each team in the league will play each other twice. Not much change for small ball
