Two Roman slaves were caught trying to escape their master’s estate — one a burly, trained fighter and the other a maidservant. Their patrician owner decided to execute them as a part of that evening’s Games.

When the time came, the two slaves were tossed into the arena against a large (and very hungry) male lion. After studying his prey, the lion then pounced upon the unfortunate girl, devouring her amongst the cheers of the bloodthirsty spectators, but sparing the other.

Afterwards when the man was returned to his quarters, his comrades there remarked how lucky he was to have escaped death at the “hands” of the beast. “I’m not sure why the lion picked her and let me go,” said the fighter, “but I’m Gladiator.”
