KOKOMO, Ind. -- A 9-year-old Howard County girl critically injured by a pit bull over the weekend died at an Indianapolis hospital on Thursday, police said.
The attack happened in the 4600 block of East County Road 200 South on Saturday, said Howard County Sheriff Marty Talbert.
The girl, Savannah Gragg, underwent surgery at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis, but died Thursday afternoon.
Police said that Savannah was opening a door at the home to let the dog outside when it jumped on her and knocked her to the floor, biting her on the neck and shaking her violently.
"The child suffered a lacerated trachea, which resulted in a lack of oxygen to the brain," Talbert said in a news release Thursday evening. "Doctors determined the child was brain dead shortly after 3:30 p.m. Thursday."
Family members told police that the dog had never shown aggression before.

another one I didn't read....post on sally..laughing at you not with you....:O)
Yeah.
Not much you don’t.
You hang on my every word and make a point to goad me when I ignore you.
Be assured Pit Bull defenders seem to be a few degrees removed from brutes.
“It is true for all persons that triangles have three angles equal to two right angels but not everyone knows this.”
Pit Bulls are killers. They kill children.
Sure ya didn’t.
The pit bull attacked the girl at her throat. This was not a typical bite.
How can you defend this? You appear to lack practical reason.
You’re right.
I had no idea angels were involved in geometry.
Where you see “pit defenders”, I see rational people seeking -real- justice for the victims in -effective- ways.
A dead dog doesn’t resurrect a kid or make up for an attack survivor’s pain and suffering.
Smashing the breeders/owners of vicious dogs, fining them mercilessly until they have borrow even an idea is the ONLY way to STOP the attacks.
Killing a hundred dogs a day won’t stop the -hundreds- being born in backyards to thugs that very same day.
Strike at the -root-, *not* the branch.
No one here ever “defends” these attacks...-ever-.
That is why we seek to stop the cause, not the result.
Why can no one look at this rationally?
Dog kills kid.
Authorities kill dog.
Kid is still dead.
Owner gets crappy little fine or citation.
Kid is still dead.
Owner buys or breeds more dogs.
Kid is still dead.
More dogs are raised by the people who created a killer in the first place.
Kid is still dead.
-Remove- the irresponsible owners/breeders from the equation and eventually you achieve stasis.
Simple.
It is against natural law not to preserve life. Every creature seeks to preserve itself by using substances made available by nature.
The Pit Bull preserves itself by killing. In most cases it is innocent human life.
That’s not a stick!
It’s a Velociraptor claw!
Run!
I am not defending it, I am just saying being a lefty loon who wants to outlaw everything is not the answer.
They can *not* spontaneously generate, though.
Did you even bother to read and consider what I wrote or are you yet another fixed/immutable opinion person, running on raw adrenaline?
Ah, this one was too short to ignore....poor baby, you hold such a high opinion of yourself....bye bye......
Ignorance is the mother of devotion to Pit Bulls..a people entirely void of reason.
A killer attacks the throat. Pit Bulls attack the throat.
Nature has taught this animal to kill in this manner not humans.
The Pit Bull should be exterminated from society.
Did you just ping me...to let me know how much you’re ignoring me?
A person who makes sweeping generalizations that fly in the face of reality is devoid of reason.
Dadgummit, I always go to the store at the wrong time!
Got my pez, though. Tiny, crunchy capsules of concentrated goodness in rectangle form. Mmmmm.
