Back when SL-9’s chunks started to hit Jupiter, Gene Shoemaker stated that, had one of the larger fragments hit Earth instead, the resulting soot/dust/vapor cloud would have covered up our view of the sky at supersonic speeds, resulting in total blackout in about 90 minutes. I guess the bright spot is, the offshore drilling ban and Demwit prohibition of Utah coal mining would be long gone (by whatever means was handy) by the time the cloud settled out years later. :’)
